Review by Conduct Lionhardt:
I've said this in several places and, i'm not just saying stuff to be nice to friends and people i know when i post about an album. I mean what i say. These words, RIGHT HERE, are really the only thing anyone online can know me by. So when i say that Notion's album is one of my top solo records of last year and the heir apparent to the masterpiece of Smoke's "Bleed" album, then you know for CERTAIN that "Late Nights Until Now" is as dope as it can be.
A few years passing and highschool behind him, you have this very record here, which is just the current level he's risen too. Leaps and bounds ahead of even the very EP he dropped a year ago, Notion KILLS this record.
Thematically somewhat like the Smoke record, IMO, "Late Nights Until Now" opens up a complete window into Notion's mind and heart...late at night.
He had the disc almost completely produced by Laidback, who makes a truly musical record. Live instruments and beats that jump from straightforward hip hop ("WriteLifeDeath", "Soul Steps", "Freedom Dance") to an almost alternative 90s sound ("Crosswalks", "S.O.S") the album combines with Notion's deep thoughts and rhyme schemes to make it less of a record and more of an EXPERIANCE.
If you are the type who likes music that really moves and loves your hip hop to be more than the run of the mill...get on this one.
oh, my fav tracks? "Running from an Angel", "Real Talk", "Freedom Dance", "Palm Someday"...almost the whole record. haha.
--------------------------
This album takes a trip through the most important time for many artists: the dark, the night. While this has a very literal manifestation - written and recorded in the latest hours - it also serves as a jump-off point for a very dark and brutally honest record. Notion begins the record with a triumphant ode to the gravity of music and his path to the present. Yet, after this triumphant beginning, he turns inward. Focusing, with an acute and unique depth on the nuances of religious spirituality, relationship dynamic, and an intensely personal treatment of the artist's perceived human condition. The record's themes refuse to preach, only to reflect, and in these reflections arise haunting self-evaluations. This album is a rewarding experience, one that demands repeated listens.
