Album Notes

Singer Wendy Nottonson has been performing jazz in the Boston area for over 15 years. She is truly a jazz stylist and is not afraid to take risks. Wendy has been jam session host for over five years at the Acton Jazz Café just outside of Boston. Her influences span from Ella Fitzgerald to Carmen McRae to Betty Carter. Wendy studied piano from the age of 6 and vocals since she was 13. She has also performed regionally and internationally with many close harmony ensembles.

After growing up in the midwest, pianist Eric Ostling has been composing and performing in the Boston area for over 15 years. His work has earned praise from such diverse musical figures as film composer Jamshied Sharifi (Harriet the Spy), jazz trumpeter Herb Pomeroy and teacher Charlie Banacos, bassist Rufus Reid, composers John Harbison and Karel Husa, and the Manhattan String Quartet.

Bassist Dave Zox has been performing throughout New England for many years. He has played with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Artie Shaw Band, and has appeared onstage with musicians such as John Abercrombie, Garrison Fewell, Jim McNeely, Kenny Werner, and Phil Woods. He performs regularly with the Al Vega Trio, Harvey Diamond, and the Wendy Nottonson Quartet. Dave is on the faculty at Longy School of Music and teaches at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.

I’m so happy I was gifted with this fabulous CD. I love Wendy's beautiful voice and how she can float her phrases in and out of the bar line - yes, like Carmen McRae. I love the excellent choice of songs that sets this CD apart. The varying rhythmic styles are tastefully executed by all band members. This is my favorite jazz CD and I share it with everyone I know whenever I get the chance. Buy this CD and share it with your friends!

The natural sound of Wendy's voice is truly wonderful. It's got substance and is the stuff of which jazz is made. Her phrasing and the way she treats lyrics is nothing short of brilliant. Her choice of material is classic, all top shelf tunes. Wendy's selection of support musicians could not have been better. Everybody turns in a stellar performance, interacting with ease. Each presentation – all twelve – is a gem. Each has the right touch of imagination. This CD is a remarkable piece of art work.

To give you in words her sound, her voice, her phrasing, her use of silence, her driving beat, her rainbow colors, her feeling, her art. I love jazz, I play brass, I need flatted fifths. But I can’t do right by you. You must hear Wendy yourself. She made me cry. Listen to Wendy. See what happens to you.
