Musical instruments are like civilisations or species. Some instruments have disappeared, others have experienced a “golden age” before fading into oblivion and finally, some have evolved, altered and adapted to create a new identity and repertoire for themselves. The Mandolin could well have become a museum instrument; it had almost become unheard of for a short period until the 20th century pulled it out from the abyssal depths where it was vegetating, hibernating for nearly a century. This fragile revival must be based upon a good quality repertoire and follow the example of the guitar by employing musicians who are capable of acting as its interpreters.
The Nov’Mandolin Ensemble brings together the talent, the energy and the enthusiasm necessary to stand out as one of the major groups to take part in its revival. By making known the repertoire of today and inspiring further compositions, they give life and shape to the music and to this instrument thanks to the quality of their work.
