REVIEWS

grossly underrated!!!
author: stephen m baczynsky
While this and their second CD received rather lukewarm reviews by a certain renowned big band jazz critic who reviews in alot of publications, I found this CD to be a testament as to what college music programs should be all about: "Creativity", "Spontaneity", making music that actually says something...communicating directly to body, soul and spirit. I find most college big bands to be "professional" sounding and indeed technically proficient but sorely lacking in what is a necessary ingredient in real music making....organicness, in other words most(99.9%) university ensmbles are CLONES. This CD by the NCU jazz ensemble is however 1 CD no big band afficionado should be without and this program will excel(if it hasn't already)above ALL of the more famous college big band jazz programs in the country IF it continues in its current creative direction. There is just not another positive superlatives in the english language to describe this work....don't hesitate..GET IT NOW!!!!! PS: I believe this CD of all original compostions is the first of its kind of all the universities in the whole country.

Not bad

Ensemble recording sounds a bit strident, but soloists sound good.Interesting compositions and arrangements.
