Album Notes

"Necromancer," the 4th CD from Portland's greatest gothabilly vampire funk band is one of it's weirdest. It's a keyboard-driven soul explosion, their only record that was written with the keys in mind instead of the guitars. This was the band's first CD released on their own label, after a run with Tim Kerr records in the early 1990s.

Here's what was written by The Shiny Things' Mark Nelson, who posts this in advance of a show we're doing together: "Portland's premier band of gunslingin, headcuttin, desperados known as The Oblivion Seekers will be laying waste to Kelly's Olympian Sat Oct 7! It's a good thing we're opening cause there's nothin much standing after their brand of Scorched Earth Policy!!! If yer lookin for SEXY, this is IT! My Rx: Git yerself "all hopped up" on those "pep pills"and "goof balls" you've been hoarding and haul yer fine ass down to the best drinkin hole in Portland! I recommend you get a straw for that beverage though, cause yer gonna need to hold on with BOTH hands when The Oblivion Seekers hit the stage! You ready for FRENZY? Oh yeah, baby....me too!!!!"

To this, I say "gracias, Mr. Nelson!" Yup. Truer words were never spoken.

If you like your music heavy and meaty, with some bones and blood exposed, this collection is for you. If Mark Sten and company didn't invent gothabilly, it doesn't matter: they own it. Not a loser in the bunch, which, incidentally, is an Oblivion Seekers trademark. From absolute black gloom to get righteous gospel, from hard-charging rockers to (believe it or don't) stately cadences and a good bit of crooning and swing, none of the songs sound like another. This is sit down and listen to it music of the highest order. Christ, the CD photos alone are worth the price of admission. And, if you're going to catch this band live, you won't get the same show twice.

The darkest record of the band glows like a tombstone in neonlight. Black humor behind the white tie – the soundtrack that "Psycho" unfortunately never got. Electric Rockabilly without the dust of the 50ies, Swing without a big band, lotta guest musicians, very eclectic record with morbid charm. And on stage there's a burning guitar once in a while ...
