My first exposure to Obol was through a Youtube video, matched to the Obol song "Lover". The video featured beautiful animation and a hidden puzzle, with little clues hidden throughout. Their music operates in much the same way. These are highly crafted compositions, artful progressive rock with an obvious effort not to lose the listener, and packed with memorable hooks that make the hair on your neck stand up. I've heard comparisons to Tool, but when I listen, I cannot shake the feeling that I am hearing a lost Muse album... Obol is alternately beautiful and devastating.
The first Obol CD, entitled Revoluçión, follows a man's life as he grows into something he did not expect. It has 11 tracks, including The Plan, Zealot, Falling Down, Opening, Wicked, Lover, Kicker, Murder, Flirt, Revoluçión, Wasted, and Fiasco. Described as "Disney on acid", Obol's music is decidedly more cinematic and visually evocative than other artists in the genre, with a heavy emphasis on bittersweet melodies that will keep you humming for weeks.
