Album Notes

Blending a punk adolescence with a seasoning in the house of folk, Life Underwater marks the emergence of James O'Brien as one of America's pre-eminent entertainers. This new release is something far more intriguing than singer-songwriter folk and far more challenging than rock and roll.

James O'Brien is an angry, thoughtful, eloquent young man. Whether he is commenting on the American social landscape (Colorado), current events (Big Time at the Iron House), or relationships (Throat), Life Underwater demands your attention without beating you over the head.

Hints of the roadhouse, deep and murky, peer out of works punctuated with sharp staccato rhythms. Allegations of ethereal, shimmering cello wisp through in-your-face, poignant lyrics which are as moving as they are topical.

Life Underwater is the musical score for the adventure to the core of our collective hearts. This hard look at reality, both cohesive and enjoyable, will move you to understand the world around you in eye-opening and uplifting ways.

LIFE UNDERWATER offers a refreshing break from conventional songwriter self-indu

This is a record for people who think they've made up their mind about singer/songwriters. It's different and it works on a bunch of levels. It'll punch you like a rock record, twist you like a Dylan lyric and provoke a search for the live performance. This guy does it. He writes like a poet. This escapes all the kitchen sink garbage of most contemporary folk records. Nobody's making singer/songwriter record that sound like this. The only thing that divorces this from easily digested mad record sales is that it's dense, conceptually. Not everyone will like it. If you're into middle of the road make you chuckle and send you home for the late news kind of folk, you'll probably wonder what the hell's going on. This is challenging. Approach with brain engaged. He's pretty cute, too.

My Dad saw James in Buffalo and emailed me to check it out (I live in New Jersey, now). I don't usually like this kind of stuff, but I like this. Attitude is correct. Keep it coming, James.

James O'Brien sings with the intensity of a falling angel.

In my heart, I know it'll be hit or miss for a lot of listeners. For those whose mind's are dulled into white boy N'Sync dance grooves, this album will come as a startling shock. A scalpel cutting deep. You may hate it. If you don't, you will find yourself both musically and spiritually enlightened. It's just a question of whether or not you're willing to hear what James is saying.

The CD was cool but checkout James in live performance...Ethel Waters i'm sure would dig him so would Jimmy Scott...he makes gestures to the world...makes you feel free..
