Album Notes

"The Offbeat is not a proper band as such. it is an artifice; which, together with the collective talents of friends, has allowed reflection within these 10 songs on the themes of love, with candour. As a field is a place where things begin, bloom, weather with the changing seasons and then fade without ever truely going away, so it is In Love Field"
Unsigned, unknown, defiantly independent and most definitely unpublished; 10 songs recorded in a room without a view but from somewhere as free as the sky, the offbeat second album In Love Field

By now you will have fathomed that this is not a “mod’ group, but when I like something I mention it. The Offbeat are not a conventional group, they are the pet project of Darren Finlan and Tony Cox and Nigel Clark of Dodgy, both known in the British pop scene (the trio feature in Tony Cox’s "Unpublished", 2009), who also feature in this "In Love Field" (2010) with 10 tracks that will inevitably remind you of the Beach Boys, the Beatles or Crowded House... Pop with a capital P; get smitten by the first song "She can make the sunshine" and let the rest of the tracks surprise you. In fact this record contains five tracks already published in the EP "To The Rescue" in 2009, but it has been enriched with five more songs to become an LP, a duration which according to Darren Finlan can reach more people. The added tracks give some continuity to "in love field" and give you the impression of listening to a complete record created as a whole from scratch. In their webpage you can find tracks like "She can make the sunshine", "Blue Sky", "Something about the girl", "Someday somehow", which are in this record. You can also find tracks from their previous work, "The Offbeat", 2008, composed together with Tony Cox (six tracks feature in their record "Unpublished"), as "Wasted", "Lonely Girl" or "Keep it Real", where you can feel Darren’s touch. "Wasted" in particular is a very rounded song. Both records are self-published, a very good reason to try and get them ‘legally’ and not with a miserly click. In a nutshell, The Offbeat are a group that, as I’ve read in several webpages, will put a smile on your face… with me they have definitely succeeded.

Melodic UK band The Offbeat have a new CD out entitled ‘In Love Field’ and I’ve been quite taken with it. Ten tracks of pure harmony laden pop with Beatles influences. Stand out is ‘Word To The Wise’ which has that ‘staggered’ ‘Revolver’ sense of rhythm – think ‘She Said She Said’ and ‘Taxman’. Recommended if you like your pop ‘pure’. A fine effort.

I’ve just come upon your music on CD Baby, and now on your website. I’m over the moon about what I’ve heard! This is great, happy pop music of the Beatlesque variety that puts a smile on the listener’s face upon first listen. Take the vocals in the intro to She Can Make the Sunshine; they just send a shiver up my spine as they spill into the first verse, the bridge, and finally the catchy chorus. This song has a wonderful, infectious melody and great vocals. What could be better? Something About the Girl has great vocal harmonies and a killer chorus with a hook that runs deep. I’m already singing along! Wasted, the tale of a love that completely takes over the object of affection, is another wonderful song with great harmonies and a sumptuous melody. You guys are making top notch music!

All you need to do is toss a baseball in the air and it will most likely hit a musician who is influenced by The Beatles. Most are lousy but some, like this UK bunch (led by songwriter Darren Finlan) are excellent. 5 of these tunes are on last year’s killer TO THE RESCUE ep and they add 5 more and all are superb. Do not miss.
