Album Notes

OLA ONABULE

Chapter six: "THE DEVOURED MAN"

As a vocalist, Ola possesses a stunning voice of enormous range and emotional clout. His voice is beautifully clear and appealingly textured, almost classical. During his shows there are moments when he lets fly with a kind of yodelling ululation and a range and elasticity to match his rich tonal qualities. The influences of soul, jazz and african music come together in subtle and sophisticated melodies and time signatures. Ola has spent much of his career concentrating on lyrics with songs that are layered with metaphor and allegory. Ola seemlessly documents the issues of the day with the universal subjects of love and loss. Ola has guested with some of America's finest soul and jazz artists including Diane Reeves, Gladys Knight, Al Jarreau, Patti Labelle, Roberta Flack, Joe Zawinul, Natalie Cole, and Roy Hargrove.

"... a master of his instrument, a superb storyteller, a gracious human-being" -
Robert Papaleoni, Co-Executive Producer "OLA ONABULE IN CONCERT" WCNY TV (PBS) Syracuse, NY, USA

"His unique selling proposition is a golden voice, with a range and smoothness that recalls singers such as Luther Vandross...

...his songs break free of funk, with a voice that is beautifully clear and appealingly textured, almost classical. There are moments when he lets fly with a kind of yodelling ululation, like a more radio-friendly Leon Thomas."
John L Walters, The Guardian

“A collection of beguilingly emotive – and surprisingly politicised songs that recalls Marvin Gaye’s masterpiece "What’s Going On" and is a world away from the airbrushed grooves that are supposed to constitute the genre these days. What’s going on indeed?" -
Rory Ford, EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS

“...His voice has touches of super smoothies George Benson and Al Jarreau, as well as the grittier Memphis style and he has a range and elasticity to match his rich tonal qualities.”
ROB ADAMS, THE HERALD, SCOTLAND

"His latest conscious soul outing ‘The Devoured Man’ ... a killer voice, and three-octave range at his disposal, Ola is a class act among many lesser, certainly less intelligent, soul-jazz Joes." JAZZWISE MAGAZINE

" The UK's answer to Donny Hathaway..."
THE BASEMENT

“The Devoured Man is probably his best complete album so far, a grown up album full of intelligent lyrics, wonderful and yearningly soulful vocals from the man himself.”
CHRIS WELLS, ECHOES

More Than A Feeling

Since I first read about Ola in Blues & Soul and after listening to one of his tracks on a very rare compilation by two german music affiliates I tried to get his records. This man is absolutely outstanding - a one man company "kickin da butt" of the major industry. Ola is a absolutely outstanding singer, songwriter, composer, producer and much more. The devoured man gives you a real deep impression of Ola's voice and y'all will know what Soul is all about. Listen to the lyrics and his stories and let Ola touch your inner feelings. If this is not enough for you get all of his 6 releases and you will be blown away by his sensitivity and musical versatility. This man deserves much more respect and acknowledgement than lots of that so called neo soul crap. Peace and soulfully yours Lutz

Thank you soultracks.com for introducing me to this fantastic artist. His voice is tantalizing, his lyrics thoughtful and the music pleasing to the senses. Where have I been? "This Fool Again" is a standout, but all are on repeat.

This is one of the greatest voices i've heard. I was going through cd baby looking for someone else and came upon him.He was so deep i forgot who i was looking for. The last cd was tough, but this one blew the last one to pieces. I would love to have this gentleman do a show on the west coast to get his name all over the states. i'm glad i have his cd's in my collection and will be looking for more. Keep up the good work. You are at the top of my list.

this U.K. soul brotha continues to keep the "old school" music tradition goin' strong well into the 21st century! I won't go into detail this time. Just pick it up if you crave that honest-to-goodness R&B/Funk/Soul/Jazz sound you all but thought took a dirt nap from the mid-'80s onward. His other albums are just as essential (especially the last three he put out prior to this one; man why hasn't this guy gotten ANY airplay here in the U.S. still???? THAT REALLY BURNS ME TO NO END!!!). First-rate musicians, inspired heartfelt songwriting, and extremely soulful vocals coming from one of the finest, most gifted artists on the contemporary scene. Something's gotta give here. Legit talent like this guy can't remain underground forever. It's embarrassing for mainstream music buyers who've never heard much quality in their purchases of late, lol...
