Album Notes

Olmec is a singer/songwriter who was born on a farm on the Texas/Louisiana border. His love of music took root there, in the Black Gospel he heard in church and the blues and country music he heard on the radio.

As a young man he traveled to New York. Once there, he began to hear the name Huddie Ledbetter, or Leadbelly--a name Olmec knew as a part of local musical lore back in Caddo Parish. For Leadbelly's music to be known and respected by musicians in New York was, to Olmec, a revelation. It made songwriting at once more appealing and more approachable, as he recognized its power to communicate; to bridge gaps; to express meaningful ideas.

Today Olmec is a bard poet musician. His songs express a healthy spirituality and a concern for people and for nature. The songs are not religious, political or sentimental. Instead they have an emotional clarity that harkens back to his farm days and a love of basic, organic living.

His first album has been a long time in coming. "Ma Says" has ten original songs, written from New York to Alaska, from Massachusetts to California and from Mexico to Iowa.

Soothing and Inspiring Work Music
author: Susan Jonsson

I play this album regularly as wonderful background music when I'm doing art or writing. There is a soothing and calm quality about it that helps me consentrate. I think "Wake with the Sun" and "This Earth" are especially lovely.

the earth is now a better place

I worked with Olmec on this CD and have a deep appreciation for his purity of art and expression. The earth is now a better place. Or, at least, we can see its potential. I love it when someone and their art / music comes along who is unique in vision and uncompromised by the expectancies of the "market." Not to say that these efforts should go unrewarded. Good should get noticed and here's to hoping that you take notice. Enjoy the hope and have a better day.

Excellent contemporary folk with a undertone of gospel
author: Allen

Olmec has put together an outstanding mix of contemporary folk. While listening I often found myself swaying to the music and tapping my foot, which I don't often do with folk. Many songs have a strong "green" streak. And Olmec's southern gospel roots undergird many of his songs, though he has no mention of Christianity. For instance, if you re-think the song "Wake with the Sun" as "Wake with the Son," it could be sung at any church gathering without changing any words.

Rich, full, very centered, a sense of peace is communicated
author: Dave

Very enjoyable, easy to listen to. I am inpressed by the fullness, richness. The centeredness, the sense of peace is communicated. In this day of anger and hostility it is refreshing to be uplifted and encouraged.
