Leonard King was born in Detroit, Michigan where he has been able to absorb the multi-cultural musics of the entire metro area. He has performed with many artists such as Donald Byrd, Johnnie Taylor, Al Green, Herb Ellis, Barbara Dane, Eddie Kendricks, Pigmeat Markham, James Carter, and many others.
He's a drummer/vocalist/arranger who is totally interested in learning music without adhering to the limitations of genre confinement. Currently he tours around the world with saxophonist James Carter, and is a member of the Southpaw Isle Steel Band, in addition to fronting his own groups such Oopapada, and the Visger Road Drum Band.
The title, Non Yawn Varieties, means that the listener will remain awake and attentive (not yawning or sleepy) whenever this CD is played because it commands a lot of attention by reachin' out and grabbin' ya. Musically speaking it's an eclectic blend of funky jazz, blues, rock, and pop with a drums/vocals, organ, and guitar combination. Highly recommended for fans of the organ group sound who are looking for something close to the edge AND in the tradition at the same time. Oopapada was formed in Detroit and has been together over ten years. If you're looking for a different direction with the organ group sound, then Oopapada is what you've been waiting for.
