Since 2004, OPEN INTEREST has been blowing audiences away with their high-energy blend of improvised jazz fused with funk, blues, swing and a touch of good-old rock-and-roll. Comprised of four of the most accomplished jazz musicians in Wisconsin, this fierce quartet performs originals and exciting arrangements of standards from many traditions.
Open Interest is:
John Salerno, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone and flute
Greg Pagel, electric piano and synthesizers
Craig Hanke, bass guitar and upright bass
Terry Iattoni, drums
The group’s eponymous debut CD features seven original compositions:
“Thrustworthy” is our tribute to Herbie Hancock, particularly his HeadHunters period from the 70’s. Lots of analog synths over a super-funky groove.
Greg’s “Assimilation” is a light, quick samba with some unpredictable chord changes.
“Alabama Bebop” is a response to the question, “What if Dizzy Gillespie played with Skynnard?” Features an impressive bass solo by Craig.
“Schmazz” is a techno-jazz piece, with quirky loops and electronic noises behind scorching sax and synth solos.
“La Buona Vida” is a beautiful earthy bossa composed by our drummer, Terry. It features John on flute.
John’s “Mathilde” is a burning bebop tune derived from an Austrailian folk song.
“Wrong Number” is a peculiar 12-bar blues, with an 11/4 time signature.
