Album Notes

Orangemoss is a band fueled by soul, intellect and sublime melodies, which leave you yearning for more. They avoid the pitfalls of cliché's and repetition that many young bands fall into and instead have a steadfast approach to their musicianship, which is both loose and demanding at once.

On their debut album, Materialize, they demonstrate a wide range of stylistic influences, from psychedelic roots rock, to reggae to folk. Quiet reflective passages, lead to seductive, almost mystical moments as the album unfolds. There is a thematic nature, which resonates throughout the album, which is heartfelt and genuine. Kevin Michael's poignant vocals lend themselves well to songs such as the introspective, "Awakening" and the nostalgic, "Traces of Past." In the latter, Kevin Michael paints an evocative picture in which you can almost see the spilled contents of an old moldy treasure chest spread out on a well-worn carpet.

Equally impressive is the band's ability to shift gears into the buoyant, "Prospect Street." Opening with a Gershwin-like piano passage, it jumps into a tightly wound constructed melody, with a pop sensibility at heart. The piano's palpable sense of playfulness sneaks back in throughout the song, finally yielding to the guitar work of Steve Szczepanik, and drumming of Josh Schmitter.

"Liberation" is easily the most accessible track with the help of an undeniable chorus. It takes a classic reggae progression and ingrains it with a propulsive rhythm. It's a great number, which showcases the band's keen musical chops and sense of harmony.

While many of Orangemoss' songs differ in style, the cohesiveness and transitions on Materialize, and in their live shows are very smooth. Quite simply they are a band that demands your attention. Whether you are a discerning rock fan, or the casual listener, Orangemoss' appeal is universal. Once you get beneath the outer rock-n-roll veneer you realize that there is so much more to discover in this band.
