The excitement of innovation never stops for Ordinary Peoples. Coming out of Ohio's kinetic music scene, the multitalented trio cooks up an unstoppable dose of charisma and an intoxicating mixture of fun. On their third full length CD, "Urban Sprawl", O.P. showcases their distinctive abilities, flowing from one feel to the next. Old school boom-bap, new school bounce, and hook-laden soul are all represented, yet the sound remains cohesive--glued together with superb wordplay and overall musical ability.

With "Urban Sprawl", O.P. exhibits a mixture of mainstream and underground styles that could help us all to forget the tired rap clichés heard on radio stations today. Exhibiting a style akin to hip-hop greats such as A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, and Jurassic 5, O.P. transcends the typical. Cuts like "Overflow" and "A World Without Money" exemplify the band's ability to combine content with catchy hooks and bangin' beats.

At their live show, O.P. invites all to listen with open ears and hearts. From hip-hop heads to hippies, the audience meshes together, captivated by the band's powerful vibe. Scraps (MC) uses positive energy and clever rhymes to convey a message that is deeper than you'd expect. The rhymes interlace tightly with the fatback beats laid down by Gerard on his half drum set/half computer creation. Ben Levels utilizes classical keyboard technique to conjure up fat basslines and multiple layers of electronic sound that envelop the listener. His vocal stylings find common ground among heavy hitters such as Andre 3000 and Nate Dogg while still remaining soulful. Together, Ordinary Peoples generates simmering, inventive music that is ready for the masses.

"Urban Sprawl" features a variety of talented special guests. Marc Roberge of O.A.R. collaborates on "Rise High" and brings a soulful reggae feel to the track. Jerry DePizzo of O.A.R is featured on guitar and saxophone on several tracks, while DJ Kevlar of Poets of Another Breed shows his skills on the turntables throughout much of the CD. Several other musicians are also featured adding to the albums depth and variety.

"Ordinary Peoples don't fall into the harder-than-you trap that captured so many of its peers, instead contenting themselves to fall between a less rootsy Arrested Development and A Tribe Called Quest." -Columbus Alive

"With this mixture of specialties, it is no wonder they have developed a unique and organic sound that faithful followers and virgin ears alike can enjoy."
-Ohio State Lantern

"Great overall musicianship and performance ability. I absolutely loved every minute of it." -IdiotPress.com

  • You guys rock me through the day
    author: Betsy

Urban Legend gets me through a commute I'm not sure why I'm drivin, a road I traveled a million times through my childhood somehow I'm back with the rents in the burbs, and most of all just lets me groove with the true flow. RAP would not be my ideal but Urban Sprawl unites a lot of talent. Thanks OP for putting these beats together and making everything REAL. I'm definitely coming to a live show! Look for meeeeeeeeee.

  • Nice Choruses, Weak Verses
    author: Jay Colorado

The CD is OK. The beats and verses are good but the choruses are elementary. Very nice vocals on the chorus though. The best songs are the ones you can preview. Keep that in mind if purchasing this CD because the album doesn't get better than the sample songs.

  • I am now a die-hard fan!
    author: Carmel

Wow. Pretty much that is the best word I can use to describe this wonderful CD. I first heard of OP October 2004 when I attended Ohio University. When I saw them live I just fell in love (besides the group members are pretty damn cute!) On a serious tip: the lyrics are so well thought out and speak to the heart of anyone who is brought up in the inner city. Also, thank you for actually being a hip hop band and not a group. I very much so appreciate the fact that you incorporate instruments within your music. I look forward to the next CD. Perhaps OP should think about having a Live Album. Just a thought. Peace & Love.

  • Good Music. Bad rapping. Decent CD.
    author: K.Cook

The CD is okay. It's good musicianship. The band and the lead vocalist (the singer, not the emcee) are very good. Scraps is pretty wack though. I mean, maybe "wack" is harsh. He's not very good, how bout that. I'd go see them perform though. Bravo.

  • 100 % sick

  • it's a great CD, with a variety of beats. Song for every mood
    author: brandy
  • Terrific Lyrics and Beats
    author: Seattle Bob

I'm not going to write anything like "bangin'" or "bling-bling" or any of that crap...but I will say that this album is terrific. In today's music scene, it's not common to find hip hop artists whose lyrics actually make people think - Ordinary Peoples do so quite a lot on "Urban Sprawl." Great beats, great music and extremely intelligent lyrics about issues that are actually important - what more could you ask for? The lyrics to "The View" are incredible...that song by itself got me to buy this album. I think that there's a new breed of hip-hop out there and let it begin with this group.

  • Love It!
    author: Amber

This CD is one of the best I've managed to get recently. Actually, I should say "re-get". It was in my collection and then stolen, and was one of the first I re-purchased. Not sure that I'll ever be able to replace the others, but this is by far my favorite so it works out well!

  • cool breeze music
    author: SS Guerilla

I definitely enjoyed how the first cut came on. The vibe of these cats is laid back, and with orthodox hip-hop elements intact this crew is destined to be hip-hop favorites. Keep the cool rhymes and melodies flowin' Peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!
