Album Notes

A seriously big-sounding CD from this supremely-integrated group; the wonderfully rich soundscape of Mike Gorman's Hammond Organ allied to Jim Mullen's sublime touch on the guitar, welded together by the swinging drive of Matt Skelton's drumming, makes for a true listening sensation! With seven original tracks from the creative minds of Jim Mullen and Mike Gorman, this CD explores much new territory, as well as interpreting some more familiar themes. From the wanton abandon expressed in Blueberry Hill, through the exploratory soloing of Mike Gorman's  El Jo, to the sheer beauty of Nessun Dorma and The Godfather, this is a CD with many depths as well as the straightforward enjoyment of good music played well.

Gig Bag was JAZZ CD OF THE WEEK in The Observer (UK, 27/02/05)

STOP PRESS: The Organ Trio have been invited to perform at the Havanna Jazz Festival, Cuba, in December 2005!

Surfing through CD Baby I happened on to Gig Bag. It's such a pleasure to hear something fresh, thoughtful, tight, and seriously good. The Organ Trio has cooked up some fine morsels of jazz here. Thanks!

Trio leader Mullen is among the U.K.'s finest jazz guitarists, with a resume that takes in stints in the great '70s funk revue Kokomo and Britain's popular '80s sax 'n' ax ensemble Morrissey-Mullen. Here, the guitarist applies his full-bodied delivery to a nice set of cookers like "El Jo," organist Mike Gorman's tribute to the late Elvin Jones, capped by a fine drum solo from Matt Skelton. The unit also carries off touching interpretations of the Puccini aria "Nessun Dorma" and Nino Rota's "Godfather II" theme. Somebody, please bring Mullen and this brilliant group to the U.S. for dates.
