Infectious spunk & soul-stirring rhythms ... Muy Caliente!
author: Joe Ross
It is interesting that both the front and back of this CD include misspellings of this fabulous group’s name. Rather than the erroneous “Boriquen,” the 12-piece salsa orchestra gets it moniker from “Borinquen,” the Spanish adaptation of the original name given to the island of Puerto Rico by its native people. Thus, the album opens with “Descarga Borinquen,” a bomba that pays tribute to the inspirations that have driven this indefatigable group that’s been in existence and thrilling audience in the San Francisco area for over two decades. Also composed by pianist Marco Montoya, track two’s “La Rumba Del Bailador,” demonstrates Puerto Rican pride. While most of the group hail from Puerto Rico, others were born in Mexico and Nicaragua. The CD’s title track was written by the group’s primary lead vocalist, Carlos Soto. Orquesta Borinquen also includes plenty of stellar brass, percussion, bass and vocal chorus. For some nice diversity resulting from a stringed instrument aesthetic, Carmelito “Angel” Velez’s cuatro occasionally appears in the spotlight in the band’s arrangement of “El Yerbero Del Barrio,” a classic song originally from Robert y su Nuevo Montuno’s 1976 release. Unfortunately, Velez passed on in 2007, and “El Trombonista” is dedicated to him and trombonist Jim Martinez who passed away in 2006. Whether you are an experienced salsero dancer or not, for lively numbers that are guaranteed to put the Latin spirit into your feet, one need look no further than to this new release from the “Bay Area’s salsa powerhouse,” Orquesta Borinquen. Besides infectious spunk and soul-stirring rhythms in their muy caliente music, the band also has built a solid reputation for being professional, fun and ready to please. (Joe Ross, 29 Palms, CA)
