Album Notes

This one and only pre-war style jug band is based on the jug band style established in Louisville in the 1920's, and takes the historical background of the 78rpm sound source seriously. They received greatest inspiration from the renowned jug player Earl McDonald, who was an enormous influence on the pre-war jug band scene in Louisville.

The band was formed around 2000 by members primarily from the Kansai area, as well as from the Hokuriku and Tokai regions. In 2002, they released their first album, "Carpet Alley-Breakdown", which consisted solely of well-known tunes of the Dixieland Jug Blowers that were composed in 1926 during the prime of the Blowers. In 2006, the band appeared in its historical documentary film "Chasin' Gus Ghost". In 2008, six years from their first release, their second album "THE JUG BAND SPECIAL", was released as a tribute to Earl McDonald.

As president of National Jug Band Jubilee, I've heard demos from dozens of contemporary jug bands who want to perform for us. Many are excellent. In this album, the Old Southern Jug Blowers come as close as any of them to emulating the sound of the 1920s jug bands. If you want that old-timey sound captured in today's audio technology, you won't do better than this one--I highly recommend it.

A very good rendition of the Dixieland Jug Blowers style of the mid twenties. This group has achieved a sound that many jug bands would sell their souls to emulate, but I would like to hear them move on and apply the same style to tunes other than those written by the Dixieland Jug Blowers
