Album Notes

OUTLIER like so many bands from the United States is having their greatest critical acclaim and CD sales/digital downloads overseas. England, France,Japan and even Australia have all been drawn to Outlier's unique sound. In Columbus Ohio(a town where 99% of the bands are cover bands)OUTLIER wrote and recorded their own tunes and had live crowds crying out the titles of their favorite songs off this their premiere release and self titled CD. The group became so popular they were quickly torn between playing live shows and doing studio work. For two years they split the difference and thus their music reflects the excitement of a live performance and the polish of studio work. Led by guitar star Matt "the cat on the strat" Mollica, and Mike Tonn from Detroit Michigan on vocals (and Les Paul guitar) they formed a classic yet newly spun melodic sound that defies description. They've been compared to a cross between Creed, Nickelback and Kenny Wayne Shepherd! Unless you've heard it for yourself you would not believe the haunting melodies, prodigeous guitar riffs and cascading power chords that make OUTLIER's sound so unique. Rounding out the group is Jeremy Wooldridge, a real heavy on the bass, and Jim Jackson on drums. Tonn's voice is thick and full and he sings with heart and grit about love and life in a way that reaches some part of you that doesn't have a name. The guitar work on this CD is exquisite. Tonn's chorus/flange fingerpicking and Mollica's killer tones, soulful searing solos and lightning fast fingers are a joy to all fans of great guitar work. If you like classic rock, acid rock,or modern blues you will love OUTLIER's music. People who own this CD will not let it out of their reach. The band has tour offers coming at them from every direction and several countries across the globe, however they are remaining focused on producing a second CD before playing live again.

Outlier is hot! Lookout Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Matt Mollica is tearing up the fretboard with a ripping and melodic style the like of which has not been seen in years. This is guitar work that would make Robin Trower smile and enjoy. "New Blue Day" is the next anthem for this generation of blues rockers.

Blues and Spice

After spending a few days with the Outlier CD I was compelled by two things: the guitar solos and the classic blues feel. Each song, though different on the outside, displays the respected and classic blues progression in the background, which gives you a sense of familiarity with each song. You almost know where the song is going next. But just as you become complacent with its direction, change comes and it comes in the form of Matt Mollica and his seemingly bottomless pool of creativity. His solos are sprinkled throughout each song bringing new energy to each in its own way. They shine like glinting stars peeking through a dark, night sky. Something that must be heard by anyone who's a fan of real music. All this, coupled with laid-back messages of love and good times, give Outlier a well-rounded ensemble that is spiced with a little Mollica fluidity.

This CD is so clear and crisp. My husband and I own the Halftime Tavern in Columbus, OH and we have listened to a lot of CD's from local bands, and Outlier has the best CD. Outlier has played in person at our tavern, and they sound just as good, if not better in person. They offer a large variety of songs which is great for all music lovers.
