Big Picture, Owl's debut owlbum, is a musical adventure. It sometimes teeters on the line between rock (Behind the Screen, A Taste of Nothing) and metal (Moonstruck, Her Twin), but is always progressive in nature. The music was originally written and recorded entirely by two people: Bruce Vermett, on drums, programming, iPad, and vocals, and myself (Tim Chimes) on bass, guitars, vocals, and growls, over the span of about a year. Bruce and I had originally attempted vocals, but that was never supposed to be final (although my vocals did stay for Just You). Near the end of mixing, vocalist Brad Babcock (a drummer originally) stepped and delivered an amazing vocal performance that absolutely blew us away. Though he can sing pretty well, we still felt that it was a good idea to have me do the growls for some of the more aggressive sections (Soul Control, Moonstruck). Bruce even still has a vocal part near the end of Her Twin (he's singing through a vocoder). In the end, I'm glad we went with Brad, because his voice really helped bring the project together.
Originally, I had intended on making this a concept owlbum, but later realized that would have been more trouble than it was worth, as two of the songs are already part of 3-song concepts, being Behind the Screen and A Taste Of Nothing. Behind The Screen will have it's counterparts on future owlbums (we already have 2 more albums completely written and are preparing to record), while I intend to make the whole A Fractured Life trilogy it's own album (they are all about 20 minutes in length). Bruce and I have been working on a lot of these songs for the last 5 years, with A Taste Of Nothing being a song that we actually played together in one of our first bands (which sadly, never even played a show). Overall, I feel like this list of songs flows together very well.
So sit back, grab a beer, and enjoy.
