Album Notes

You are taken on a journey deep into the tradition of Gypsy music starting with one of the earliest dances known, Mainerio's "Ungaresca" (c 1560) to hauntingly beautiful melodies and fast dances from Hungary, Russia, Romania and Spain, from Romantic times to the present day. A superb selection of the most popular and entertaining traditional musical gems of these countries, performed by the Paganini Duo with fiery Gypsy violinist Gustaw Szelski and superb accompanier Georg Mertens on guitar or cello. College violinist Steve Collins tells about Gustaw Szelski at the Sydney Conservatorium: "He was envied for his incredibly beautiful sound. Like all of us he was asked to do auditions for training purposes, but in difference to us he got a position on the spot."

Top downloads:
1 Czardas (Vittorio Monti)
2 Black Eyes (Traditional Russian)
3 Andante from Zigeunerweisen (Pablo Sarasate)

Our Favorites:
Gustaw: 100 Kisses (Tradional Hungarian)
Georg: Hungarian Fantasy (Wolfgang Russ-Bovelino)

Biography:
The Paganini Duo performed together since 1989. The Duo played also together in various ensembles including 'The Blue Mountains Trio' and 'The Tarantella Trio'. Today they perform regularly their famous concerts in the underground "Cathedral Chamber" at Jenolan Caves, Australia (see also their CD; 'An Hour in Heaven')
Both performers live today in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains.

Polish/Hungarian violinist Gustaw Szelski trained at the Sydney Conservatorium and has played in many of the great Australian orchestras and as back up for artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Shirley Bassey, Marcia Hines and The Little River Band.
German born Georg Mertens is a virtuoso of cello and guitar, trained at the prestigious Staatliche Hochschule fuer Musik in Freiburg / Germany. He has performed hundreds of solo concerts across Europe and Australia (see also his CD's for guitar and cello solo).

Georg Mertens published on his (here linked) website his ground breaking systematic analysis of bow technique.

Warm, tradional, and diferse

It took me some time to get used to the very bright hight sounding violin solos, but after I that, I was hooked! The music is tradional, quite diferse, and alternating. Slow parts got alternated with faster and spirited parts. Because of the warm sound and quiet parts I'd like to start my day, and end my day with this album.
