For the past five years, New York-based digital
artist, Bill Byrne, has exhibited his prints and video
installations worldwide. Sound has been an integral
element in his artwork and in late 2004, he started
recording musical compositions as The Painful Leg
Injuries. His latest CD release entitled Backwards,
Broken and Incorrectly is currently available through
OKS Recordings of North America.
On Backwards, Broken and Incorrectly, Byrne began by
integrating the organic sound of his installation work
with subtle abstract melodies inspired by Brian Eno
and Christian Fennesz. Byrne boldly achieves his
mission through constant experimentation and
implementation of oddball techniques such as guitar
played by knife, zither played with a slide, and
manipulating feedback loops created by plugging analog
effects processors into themselves. In his recording
process, Byrne employs an ambitious array of
instruments as varied as the theremin, melodica,
synthesizer guitar, and steel drums. The result is a
marriage of artistry and technology with as much in
common with the electronic music pioneers of the 60's
as his contemporaries. On this release Byrne creates
a fractured, alien beauty with large haunting
atmospherics and distinct, emergent melodies that
evolve and shift, in effect lulling and challenging
the listener at every turn.
This CD-R release marks the first major release from a
new label run by Byrne and his longtime collaborator,
Jonah Goldstein, OKS Recordings of North America.
OKSRNA will specialize in limited-run artist created
CD-R releases that create new and exciting directions
for musical expression. Backwards, Broken and
Incorrectly is currently available at New York's Other
Music and directly through the artist by contacting
him at painfulleginjuries@yahoo.com.

beautiful strange and classical sounds that make an imagination roam for freedom
author: Amanda
I sampled the work and was strangely amazed at how much I did enjoy listening to the cd. Being an artist myself, my mind started roaming with colors and aspects of life that envoke these specific noises and sounds. Harmonized together, I would have never put my thoughts to these specific colors, but it worked. Great job and look forward to more.

Melds old school academic electronic music with modern ambient stylings
author: Kislak
As a fan of both the originators and the modern practitioners of ambient electronic music, I was glad to have found an album that captures the spirit of both worlds with equal parts heart and humor. Perennial essential listening! The Painful Leg Injuries also have a weekly podcast on iTunes that I subscribe to, which you should too if you like this album as much as I do!
