PAINTED ON WATER:
After a debut that fused elements of classic, rock, electronica, and funk, PAINTED ON WATER challenge themselves once again to create something unique from their varied palette of influences. This time the results are different: on their upcoming EP and LP releases, the duo streamlines their pan-musical vision into a collection of majestic and finely crafted pop-rock songs.
“For this album, I wanted to change the way we collaborate, change all the methods we use to compose, and come up with new production techniques,” says composer/guitarist/producer DEMİR DEMİRKAN. “It’s been really liberating.”
Based in Chicago, PAINTED ON WATER are DEMİRKAN and vocalist SERTAB ERENER, both of Turkish descent. Their new music utilizes their trademark vocal harmonies, electronic flourishes, and traditional Anatolian motifs, but turns up the guitars for an invigorating rock-focused aesthetic. It’s a multi-dimensional sonic vision that evokes Muse, Evanescence, or even Sade – with such divergent reference points, transgressing boundaries and labels, it’s music only PAINTED ON WATER could make.
This new music will be issued as an EP in November 2013, followed by an LP in February 2014. In the meantime, DEMİRKAN offers some sneak-peak commentary on the track Why Do You Love Me, having verse lyrics quoted from W. Shakespeare's sonnets and plays, on romantic love. Welcome to the beautiful syncretism of PAINTED ON WATER.
DEMİR DEMİRKAN and SERTAB ERENER have a deep bond. They’ve been together as collaborators and lovers for 16 years, and in Turkey they’re a prime example of a forward-thinking couple.
As music collaborators they have a rare pedigree. Both ERENER and DEMİKRAN are formally schooled in music, and both are fluently expressive in a wide variety of styles, from technical jazz and ethnic music to muscular rock, pop, and all subsets of electronic music.
With two releases under their belts, and U.S. debut shows and tours behind them, Painted On Water are poised to make their mark. “We were on tour recently in America and I realized how excited I was to be starting this new chapter,” DEMİRKAN says. “There are so many stories to write and live out and that makes me so happy.”
