Album Notes

"I know it's cliché... but if music speaks straight to the heart, then tango speaks right from the gut!" This is how singer Leon Palad relates his attraction to the tango repertoire. The singer's fascination and his conservatory background combine in his meaty interpretation of "Por una cabeza," in the stirring lyricism of "El día que me quieras," and again in six other gorgeous tracks. "Part of the challenge was to bring the energy of a live stage into the recording studio, and I think everyone faced up to it," he says.

With a similar background, Kilo Muñoz began his musical career performing in supper clubs and cafes in San Francisco. Even though he is fluent in the classical repertory, he also feels right at home hustling gritty tango songs. "Tango songs are always about love, different kinds of love. It's easy to be seduced by their melodies, as well as their passion and mysterious mood," he explains. Muñoz makes his point in an evocative interpretation of "Yuyo Verde" and in the gushing pathos of "Maria," among others.

REVIEWS

author: Jorge Becerril
As a musician I am very much versed in the art of making memories last a life time. Having heard great artist and experienced many nights of nostalgic libations I am not only pleased to hear great music but very much addicted to the music of Essential Tango created by opera stars, Kilo Munoz and Leon Palad. This collaboration of Essential Tango ballads brings out the best of them in terms of voice and musical artistic knowledge. Their classical training not only delivers the Tango spirit of Argentina but exemplefies the heavy influence of habanera music predominent in Central and South America as well as in the Carribean. The songs that are part of this musical compilation most essential to any type of singer wanting to learn tango are 1)Mis Buenos Aires Queridos,2)Caminito,3) Por Una Cabeza,4)El Dia que me Quieras,5)Nostalgias(excellent),6)Volver, 7) Yuyo Verde, and the great 8)Cambalache. For more serious singers Mano a Mano requieres a strong and knowledgeable singer that can execute complicated voice techniques. The finale brings out the proffesional voices of both singers with Milonga Tradicional and shows that Tango Essential is a musical work that is not to be passed without noticing the artistic and above all the appeal that Tango brings out in the masses. The songs mentioned are Essential to any Tango enthusiast and a must to any music lover. Jorge
