Great first album from beginning to end. The best is yet to come I'm sure.
Scott, Justin and Kim provide a great blend from the first sond to the last. It's a great first album, and I'm excited what is on the horizon. The CD never gets old to me or my friends.
Wool Overcoat: While not my favorite song on the album (by the way, I still love the word album), it’s definitely one of my favorites. I’ll get to my favorite later. More importantly, it’s a very good song with which to start the album. The acoustic guitar to start with immediately got my attention. I like how the second verse brings in more, both vocally and instrumentally. I like how raw the vocals sound. I love how Justin (I’m assuming it’s Justin since I can really tell on certain songs where you are) sounds when he says “I am who I aaaammm” and “my lips move but they don’t speak” near the end. My favorite part of the entire song is the harmony with Kim. Overall, it’s very strong song. As I said, it’s a great one with which to start the album. When I first popped in the CD…well, let’s say that it may a very good first impression.
Overwhelming Calm: I love the start of this song too. It’s a great contrast for overcoat. It’s also good to go from Justin to Scott on lead vocals. I like the guitar sounds in this one. And like “Overcoat”, I like how it starts lower musically and adds. Now, like overcoat, my favorite part of this one is the harmony. I really like how the harmony continues past the chorus as well. But the chorus sells the song. I think the bridge is great as well. I love Kim on it. I think the bridge is perfect for the song too. I like how it goes back softer like the beginning of the song as well.
So far, both of the songs don’t seem to have as much as the early rock influence as some of the others. But then, we get to the next one.
Paper: This one definitely has some early rock influence. I can’t exactly put my finger on what early rock, but it’s there…at least for me. Maybe it’s good that I can’t put my finger on it. It makes it original, not a rendition of someone else. Again, this is much different from either of the other two. While “Calm” is obviously calm, this has a softer sound to it…at least the beginning. I do like how Kim comes in with the electric guitar at the end.
Anything. Definitely one of my favorites on the album. I love the intro. This might be the closest to being a radio-ready hit. I like the stark contrast between the verses and the chorus. The song, especially the chorus, has a U2 feel to it…almost to being a “tribute” song to them. I’m not saying that’s bad. I like how the song gets soft again to end after how hard it was in places. Great song.
Waiting on the Thief. I like the lyrics. The song overall is really short. It’s almost like an interlude.
Out in the Fields. I love the music on this one. I love the intro, how it starts and slowly builds into more instruments…especially the organ and tambourine. I like the melody of the lyrics. I like the strong guitar sound in between the first and second verse. Like before, I love the harmony between Scott and Kim. I like where Scott sings with the distorted spoken voice especially when the two meet “Here I blandly fake the sacred act”. Then you finish up with that great harmony.
Thin. For some reason, the start of thin reminds me of Tom Petty. Good lyrics. I like how different it is compared to some of the other ones.
Wasted. I know I keep mentioning this, but I like the intro and how the song builds. I like how the Justin’s vocals sound in the verse. I like the guitar leading up to the chorus. I hear the early influences a lot here too…especially in the second verse.
Beautiful Life. Ah, yes. Remember when I said I’d get to my favorite song later. Well, later has arrived. I love this song. Perfect radio song. The intro is great. It reminds me of Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You” a little. I love everything about this song musically. I love the instruments. The organ sound sells it even more for me. I’ve always been a fan of songs with just acoustic guitar. Heck, I like the sound in hip hop songs. Lyrically it’s a hit too. Unlike many of the songs, you instantly know the name of this song when you hear it. I love how it changes to wife at the end to. Great, great song.
Service: I like the sound of the song…haunting. The vocals could have been a little stronger, although I understand they were to be lighter in the verses. The song reminds me of somebody, but I can’t put my finger on it. I like the different levels of the song.
In Between: This is another one I like a lot. As usual, I like the harmony with Kim in the chorus. I always like the mellow stuff anyway. I like the lyrics too. This one definitely shows some of the early rock influence particularly near the end. I like how it gets back to the softer sound at the end.
Starchild: Finally, some good bass! I like the sound of this too. I like the vocals, although the levels could be a little higher. It was hard to hear a lot of them. Good sound though.
The Last Song: I like the start. Early influence is there. Good song to end with, or at least be the last song listed. Short and sweet.
