PALMA GROOVE PROJECT is Orlando Lund, and Sheela Gathright. Orlando and Sheela's co-written songs are a soulful, funky and melodic collaboration.
Songwriter, lead guitarist, band leader and producer Orlando started his odyssey into funk with the famously 'off the wall' soul-funk-jazz collective "The Big Cheese All Stars" which he formed in London in the early 1990s. In 1995 the Big Cheese All Stars released a seminal double album "Prawns", which is regarded as an Acid Jazz classic with a twist of PFunk and a heavy dose of Soul. Orlando has contributed not only the musical compositions, but also ALL of the instrumental parts and programming, as well as many backing vocal parts and lyrics to the PALMA GROOVE PROJECT album. His use of honest, oldskool soul & funk instrumentation creates a tight and appealing backdrop for Sheela's vocals.
Sheela Gathright is originally from New York, and is a soul-singer-extraordinaire. Her amazing talent runs in the family. Sheela is the daughter of Willie Wright, enigmatic soul artist and songwriter from the 70s. Sheela's animated, charismatic, and soulful vocal performances light up the album. Her honest lyrics inhabit the groove, and, where she explores more familiar topics she does so with a great sense of humour, humanity and tenderness. Her contribution to this record represents the full flowering of an exceptional artist hitting new heights of accomplishment.
Whilst the majority of songs in the 'funk / soul' genre are rooted in 4/4 rhythm, syncopation and groove, the Palma Groove Project album also showcases great songwriting, great musicianship, use of melody, very effective use of vocal harmonies, and the use of different rhythms. The effect this has is to cross-fertilize funk with elements of pop, blues, jazz, soul, rock and salsa. This greatly enriches the music, making it more accessible, and more welcoming. Let your ears take you on a journey and enjoy the ride. STAY FUNKY!
