Album Notes

Once upon a time, there were two people (Christos and Ruth) who wanted nothing more than to sit in their basement playing obscure Greek and Albanian tunes... then they looked across the street and saw Kane Mathis, Whoa, that\'s weird, they all said, to be living on the same street... maybe we should play some music together. Then they called their friend Will Dowd to see if he was down for some groovy Balkan tunes! With the able assistance of Dave Bartley, when we can pull him away from his other endeavors, Pangeo was reborn! Pangeo is the name of the mountain range behind Christos\' native village of Proti, Serron. We cross the Greek border frequently to follow the tunes we love and tiptoe around the mines that litter the landscape of Balkan politics... grab your \"exit visa\" and enjoy the music! REVIEWS

A spicy blend - a feast for the ears!

I can't stop listening to Pangeo's new CD. Not only does it feature some of my favourite types of music, particularly Epirot Greek and Albanian, but it also provides a perfect showcase for the musicianship of husband and wife duo Christos Govetas and Ruth Hunter, along with their accomplished musician friends Will Dowd and Kane Mathis. What I think is most striking about this CD is the way the vocals blend with and complement each other, and the way the vocal sound weaves in and out of the instrument lines, providing exciting harmonies and rhythms that won't let you sit still. Another aspect of note is the way the creative rock-driven electric guitar works together with the traditional Albanian and Epirot arrangements - I almost felt as if Kane were playing with the listeners as his rock riffs appeared and disappeared so smoothly, adding another little bit of zest to the mix.

Up to these musicians' usual excellent standards. A wonderful combination of tunes both new to me and old favorites presented with a fresh, uncluttered sound that is at once technically sophisticated and down to basics. Dave, now I know where you are getting his ideas for KGB! Signed -- a Balkan-contraphile,
