Album Notes
More than three years after releasing his solo debut “cosmic americana”, Matthew Carlson returns with “Memory Is All” with the help of band mates The Pantones. “Memory Is All” continues “cosmic americana’s” sonic and thematic arc, yet it immerses itself in new sounds and textures. With the help of longtime collaborators Tim Lefevre (bass guitar and drums) and David Baldwin (multi-instrumentalist), Carlson’s straightforward song writing and acoustic Midwestern delivery are beautifully complemented by the sheen of fuzzy hammond organ sounds, relaxed drums and unique arrangements. Taking a foundation of folk songs and roots music into a new realm. The Pantones sound is also fleshed out by the fine work of Erin O'Bryant on keyboards and Mary Baldwin on violin. While the Pantones incorporate the work of hallmark influences like Neil Young, Bob Dylan and The Byrds; their style is even more akin to the work of independent artists like Mojave 3, Wilco, Red House Painters, and Iron and Wine.

The 11 songs here are about family, self doubt and the sea changes of life that are sometimes invisible until we look back. All at once “Memory Is All” is catchy and haunting, warm and lonesome. Carlson tackles the loss of friendships due to wanderlust on both “Olympia” and “Paris, Ireland & Stockholm”, and longs for a better, easier life on “Simple Things”. There is the hope of recovery that carries “Better By The Day” and the embracing of family responsibility in “Hannah” and “Rolling In”. “Memory Is All” is a record covered in the feelings of what it’s like to grow up, grow apart, and grow into something new.
