Album Notes

New York, the birth place of "cool Jazz" was also the birth place of ‘Papa Dave’ Chiodo. At age nine, Dave, began studying guitar in Niagara Falls and at thirteen was sneaking into the Jazz Clubs across the Canadian border. Dave's personal list of the all time greats include his first instructor, Charley Chirenza, along with Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Johnny Smith, Jon Hall, Charley Christian, Wes Mongomery, Jim Hall, Kenny Burrell, Carlos Santana, B.B. King and George Benson, all great performer/ musicians whom Dave emulated and enjoyed.

By 1958 Dave's family had moved from New York to Florida where Dave organized a group called the Apollos in the Palm Beach area. This group was signed to the Mercury record label. The Apollos evolved into The Birdwatchers, One of Florida's best known bands, to satisfy Mercury's need for a "Euro" group to compete with the Beatles. Then Vietnam happened and Dave was drafted and turned in his guitar for a gun. This was an inopportune time time for Dave to be yanked out of the music business but he actually formed a group while serving in Europe and though his main job was a Top Gun, "tank gunner" for the United States Army, Dave kept up his music. On his return to the States his first gig was backing Dionne Warwick in Miami. Dave worked with Chubby Checker, Sam and Dave, The Secrets, Ray Stevens, The Coasters, George and Gwen McRae, The Drifters, Charley McCoy, Styx and many others.

‘Papa Dave’ Chiodo continues his composing and recording with the Soul Deep Rhythm Section. And finally, following "Papa Dave's" natural inclination, and to be sure the circle will be unbroken, he shares his knowledge to "pay it forward". "Papa Dave" is a master teacher.

If you can recognize an amazing musician when you hear one, then you will appreciate Papa Dave's new album 'Blue Jazz'. Coming from someone who "grew up" in a recording studio, literally, I know what it took to put this together. However, I have seen first hand Papa Dave walk into a recording session and he can play anything, anytime, anywhere! Way to go, Dad! You're still hip!! Love, your daughter from Texas. (my favorites "Pistol Packin' Papa" and "It Is What It Is.")

Papa Dave remains true to the `core' style of blues, one where the likes of B.B. King and George Bensen live, as can be heard in the haunting melodies of `On a Roll' and `My Girls'. It is clear that Papa Dave's World is one of hollow-body electric guitars, where strings are struck and twisted and pulled with a dedicated precision, only to be released at a predetermined moment in time...revealing a creation of new yet familiar progressive jazz licks, where imagination meets hard reality. It is interesting to note, that although an obvious `master' of the hollow-body experience, Papa Dave also brings a fresh and very exciting perspective to electric jazz, through `Bilderberg Blues' and `I'm coming home'. All in all, Papa Dave's work is a glimpse into a World where proficiency isn't just another word that's too hard to understand. For my part, I enjoy artists whose work ethic still gives guitar manufacturers a reason to get up in the morning. Great work, Papa Dave!!!

When a multi-talented artist/guitarist, who was raised on Jazz, made his living in Rock and Blues comes into the studio, something provocative happens. Papa Dave's new BLUE JAZZ album is an eclectic combination style, based on nice melodies, engaging leads, soulful guitar licks and good danceable rhythms. Producing this album was an exciting, exacting project. A NOTE FOR NEW FANS:Papa Dave is a patriot who should be running for something (not president, please)because of his deep awareness of American history and human rights. Check out some of his song titles."Ringtones for Patriots"
