Dilapidated Beauty

by The Paperboys

Reminiscent of early Elton John and Van Morrison, the album features one disc of Eagles-laced alt-country, and another of Tower of Power horns and gospel choirs. For this tenured band, Dilapidated Beauty is as much a departure as it is a homecoming.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Describing The Paperboys' sound isn't easy. Never ones to do the same thing twice or rest on their past success, their music is always evolving, yet grounded by the vision of Mexican-Canadian founder Tom Landa. Like Paul Simon, Steve Earle, Los Lobos and the Band before them, The Paperboys redefine their musical style from one album to the next - sometimes even from song to song on one album.

Formed in 1992, the band began as a Celtic Pop outfit, but soon added other musical elements to the mix. Today they slide effortlessly from Americana Country to Latin Groove to Stax influenced Soul tunes or to a ragin Celtic Stomp.

You could call it Latino Celtic Grass or Country Soul. Most describe it as Acoustic-based Roots music. But screw it, just call it good music!

This sound has garnered them rave reviews and industry accolades, including a Juno (the Canadian Grammy). Their impressive performances have brought them to some of the most prestigious theatre and club stages, as well as Pop and Folk Music Festivals in North America and around the world.

Over the last eight years, these hardcore troubadors have toured the US, Canada and Mexico, and for the last two years have added the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Scandinavia to their relentless touring schedule. They have done all this without the aid of major labels or commercial radio support. With four full-length CDs and one greatest hits album behind them, The Paperboys have had numerous TV and radio appearances, and have been featured in two major motion pictures. There is a big buzz about this band, and all who see them become instant fans. They have developed a cult-like following for the last decade that is ready to burst onto the mainstream. It's a transition The Paperboys will make with grace, elegance and tons of musical integrity.

CRITICS RAVE ABOUT THE PAPERBOYS LIVE PERFORMANCE

"If you don't believe a jig can shred, listen to The Paperboys"
-Chris Nickson, The Seattle Rocket.

"The mixture of swirling violins, the energy of the banjo, guitar, accordion, drums and more, make it impossible to sit still... But lead singer Tom Landa's voice and songwriting talents are reasons to sit still and listen."
-The Hour, Montreal.

Great songwriting, great playing, great singing. a 5 out of 5!
What an incredible CD! There are so many good things to say about this CD but here are the things you should know. Side 1 is a mellow country/folk CD that reminds me of Slaid Cleeves, The Jayhawks and Ryan Adams. There also some Irish elements like whistle and accordion which give it a Waterboys kind of feel. The songs are brilliant and the imagery and melodies stay with you for days.
Side 2 is so different from side 1 that it is hard to believe it is the same band. This side is upbeat and in where side 1 is sparse, side 2 is a lot more orchestrated. There are horns, electric guitars, piano and organs. This side sounds more like Motown meeting folk music. What makes it all work (side 1 and 2) is the strong songwritting of Tom Landa as well as co-writers Kelly and Mitchell. From browsing at their website I understand there are several others CD's and they are all as diverse as this one, mixing all sorts of musical styles together. My suggestion is Just buy it!

Strong contender for spinne's Favorite Album of 2003!
The Paperboys have set the standard for great music by bringing together the best talent in North America, and they don't let you forget that with Dilapidated Beauty. Each member is a stellar musician in his/her own right, and when combined with the others, the whole becomes something greater than the sum of its parts.
Whereas any album with a hook can entertain for a little while and then be forgotten, Dilapidated Beauty will stay with you. Songwriters Tom Landa and Steve Mitchell give voice to so many emotions with such perfect clarity that you'll wonder how they knew exactly what you felt at some moment that happened last week, last year, or ten years ago.
Disc 1 of Dilapidated Beauty has more of a quiet country/Americana feel than previous Paperboys albums, but if country isn't your thing, don't let it worry you. This half, entitled Night Driving, incorporates country elements like twangy guitar, solid three- and four-part harmonies, and pure emotion without getting mired in that backwater feel. Disc 2 (Saturday Afternoons) changes gears and shifts into horns and soul with an upbeat feel while still keeping the mandolin, banjo, and fiddle.
With so much to explore and discover in each song, Dilapidated Beauty really does get better each time you listen to it.

Utterly Excellent!!
I absolutely ADORE The Paperboys so this album is a real treat. Excellent songwriting from Tom, Steve and Geoff. Some lovely ballads (if i could be there) as well as some great seat twitching foot stomping tracks (perfect stillness). I would highly reccommend this album to anyone who has great taste!!! It deserves and infinate no. of stars, not just a mere 5!!! Paperboys, you have done it again! :-)

I would guess that this is probably the Paperboys' poorest seller, and even though it's relatively recent, it is not usually well-represented in their live shows (only "Perfect Stillness" and "Easy Chair" seem to be regular additions to the setlist, although others pop up from time to time). From that one might conclude that it isn't a good representation of the band, but that isn't quite so. In some ways, it might be the best example of the band's breadth, including as it does both acoustic folk rock and horn-driven pop soul. And while it arguably lacks the obvious hooks of "Molinos" or "Road to Ellenside," it still features some remarkably mature and self-assured songwriting. In short, I guess I would say that this fairly difficult release probably wouldn't be the one I would suggest to a new fan looking to buy his or her first Paperboys record - but that established fans will want to own it, and will be well-rewarded for giving it repeated listens.

Paperboys have delivered!!!
Having heard the Paperboys in March 2002 at the Easter Folk Festival, Cambridge UK I have been waiting for their next release. The reason - Blue Highway. However it was great to find that there are even better tracks on the CD(s). Every time I play the discs they get better. Circle Bound, By the Hand..., Crooked Grin and Perfect Stillness along with Blue Highway are personal favourites. Well done and I look forward to your next trip over the pond. ps, cdbaby send by far the best order confirmation I ever read. Well done you guys as well!!
