ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Music for bassoon and cello!? That alone seems like a paradox. The first question many people have for us is usually, "Is there anything composed for cello and bassoon?" The short answer is "not much" - at least in comparison to more mainstream instrumentations. But we are blessed that Mozart seemed to think this was a viable combination. Other composers throughout the centuries have continued to write music for cello and bassoon as well. As of 1993, there were 44 different composers who had composed 89 works for bassoon and cello. Several works on this CD have been written specifically for us within the past decade. We are also fortunate that our individual instruments have had hundreds of duets composed for them - everything from pedagogical exercises to double concertos. Many of these works are very playable (and listenable!) on bassoon and cello. On this recording you will find an eclectic mix of music - ranging from classical, jazz, folk, to avante-garde. So while cello and bassoon is a more unusual combination, it is the only duo for us, both musically and personally - after all, we are a "pair o' docs"!

Worth checking out
Interesting instrumentation. I was a bit distracted by the clicking of the bassoon's keywork on occasion, but otherwise, it was a nice program and good blend of sounds.

Grace

Way cool.
Cello and bassoon duets? No way!! Well, yes way, and done quite fantastically, I might add. While cello and bassoon seem a rather odd pairing at first thought, the Drs. Marshall prove any naysayers wrong with their awesome duet collection. The Vivaldi two cello (erm, cello and bassoon) concerto is probably the best portion of the disc, but the other pieces aren't far behind. I could do without the.... interesting... cover art, but the music itself is quite brilliantly put together. It's bizarre in a good way- an excellent mixture of two interesting instruments done by very cool people.
Oh, and Mr. Marshall made me say all of this. (Just kidding! I'd lavish this CD with praise even if the cellist wasn't my teacher.)

Andy

Great music performed great!
This cd has many fun pieces that will bring a smile to anyone's face. The performances are absolutely top drawer and the musicianship is superb. A really great cd that offers several genres of music in a very entertaining style.

A pleasant surprise!
I stumbled upon this CD when I was looking on-line for a recording of the Mozart bassoon/cello duet for my son and his friend. It turns out that the CD is full of so much great music that I bought 3 copies!

David

We're fighting cancer here. When we're down - it's up. When we're reguvenating - it's relaxing and warms the heart and soul.

Great music, a welcome change of pace. Great for relaxing, background, foreground, or middle ground - a great fit. Cheery music without being demanding.
