“...Gypsy fire and the romance
of Paris, 1949!...”
Formed in Austin, Texas late 2003, Paris 49 gathers 5 guys who share the same passion for American Jazz and its interpretation by Django Reinhardt's various bands of the 30's and 40's. The sound is the blend of 2 electrified Gypsy guitars and the tenor saxophone, a thick and surreal effect. Upright bass and drums work intricately together, flirting with a Be-Bop beat, while never really stating it.

Excellent debut!

Sad as I am that it's been so long since there's been an 8 1/2 Souvenirs release (and I still hold out hope for more), I'm glad to find that Olivier Giraud is in a new band and is introducing me to some more of Austin's finest.
This release is a tighter focus on early jazz and hot jazz than Souvenirs and this is a good thing, more roots with still plenty of toe tapping, head-nodding, and swinging early jazz. 'Menilmontant' is all the evidence you need and shows the entire band in fine form.
'Sous le ciel de Paris' may cause you to reach for a Walting partner. Anniversary Song shows some nice improvements on Giraud's singing.
And the next track? Oh gosh, if you love hot jazz and early jazz, you'll should just get this. And if you're a fan of 8 1/2 Souvenirs, it's an absolute must have.
I give it 5 stars because even though the recording quality isn't as strongly in-your-face as bigger label records, it suits the music well.
