Without a trace of voiced political larvicide, Ringoes NJ's 32 year young Taylor CE 314 & EV 678 acoustic guitar playing singer-songwriter, Jessica Paris signed-up directly out of high school to proudly serve our country in the U.S. Army in Korea, the world's most heavily armed militarized border before turning to the 1st Infantry Division of Ft. Riley, KS moving closer to home with the NJ Army National Guard for a combined 9 1/2 year hitch, scoring a sheepskin in music, turned out a new CD & also works towards serving some hungry masses with an impending nutrition degree at Rutgers, the State University of NJ. The slender & fit, leggy Paris who'd reportedly scored highly in USO singing competition's takes her turn in seeking a true musical voice for her jazzy, pseudo prog- folk inclinations. Those with deep & varied music catalogues might reach stylistically to the melody's of Angela Bofill, some of the tremulous phrasings of the Go-Go's Belinda Carlisle or even a revved-up touch of Fairport Convention's mellifluous, melancholic Sandy Denny albeit in a deeper register as fore bearers to 'Tempting The Gods', Ms. Paris first full 10 track Digi-packed outing that arrived at CDBaby.com & iTunes sometime since pressing in January '07. Not much like the wholly self absorbed Fox TV hotel chain heiress or the ditzy blond shortcomings of her MTV - Nick Lachey'd pop tart namesake's, this songstress presents a more welcome introduction to home grown artistry than any full blown media-rific sensationalism; Jessica Paris is well on her way to finding the future fates of what her sonic visions just might hold. Jessica's a tried & true member of Trenton NJ's R&B, funk-o-matic rock four piece, Honey Spot Blvd who back her live and on disk. A fan of the often pensive Jonatha Brooke & others, Paris' poppier inclinations might give pause to how she'd also sound surrounded by a string quartet or with some downbeat hipster jazz muffins in- tow. On one track JP asks, Do you think my voice is sweet, like sugar cane? Should a jones for early 70's Tracy Nelson of Mother Earth with a nip of Greenwich Village 60's icons the Blues Project cycled thru the Garden States capital city, the answer is all but self evident. Monotheists & Greek cult iconoclasts alike might both agree that the graphic porning-for-dollars theme of 'The Whore', a starkly solo inquisitive partner - lost, 'Half Moon' and partner - found, 'Sal's Ballad' a singular hip hop flavored rhyme & verse song cut in a Mic Wrecka /Mike Brenner / Slo-Mo kind of way are this CD's most distinct and contrasting enticements. Jessica Paris is a very talented songwriter and it's hard to believe such a strong and unique voice comes out of such a small package! Her songs are infectious and lyrics intriguing. I listened to the CD once, then again, and already was singing "Socrates and the Virgin Mary", "Insanity" and "New Orleans" in my head. "Sugar Cane" and "Missing July" keep me coming back for more. I can't wait for Jessica to get mass distribution. I believe it's only a matter of time.
