notes

Since emerging onto Philadelphia's jazz scene, vocalist Joanna Pascale has established herself as a compelling and skilled vocalist. At just 24 years old Joanna already has a working repertoire of over 400 songs. She brings a strong emotional element as well as a solid sense of swing to her uncommonly large catalogue of jazz standards.

What really sets Joanna apart from other vocalists, though, is not her repertoire, but her musicianship. Despite her young age, Joanna brings a depth of artistry to her music that rivals that of many singers who have been in the business for decades. The Philadelphia Metro raved, "Don't let her age fool you, Joanna Pascale is a highly sophisticated singer."

Joanna has also gained the admiration of Philadelphia's most prominent musicians. "Joanna has her own style," stated legendary saxophonist Robert "Bootsie" Barnes, "She has been influenced as have all young 'song birds', but once you hear Joanna you'll know it's her. Copycats don't last, but Joanna will be around for a long time."

Joanna's latest album, When Lights Are Low, showcases her approach to the timeless standards of American music. Joanna is able to enliven these songs in a unique and personal way. A young vocalist with an uncommonly mature depth of artistic skill and conception, Joanna Pascale is one of jazz's most promising up and coming singers.

  • A wonderful CD!
    author: Paul Morrissette

I purchased this CD to add it to my collection of recordings of "Stardust." (See it at www.stardustsong.com) I own over 700 performances of Hoagy Carmichael's classic and I'd rate this as one of the best I've heard. The entire CD is simply one great performance afer another!

  • Superlative. Buy it!

One of the best debut discs ever. Absolutely superlative. Besides having a voice that is bang on the note when she wants it to be, besides having near-perfect diction, Miss Pascale understands lyrics and brings them very close to home. For anyone who cares about the highest peaks of singing there is only one message. Buy it!

We enjoyed Joanna Pascale's When Lights are Low and can't wait for her next one. Our wish is that she will include I'm an old cowhand and record it with the Philly greats that she worked with at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

  • My best musical discovery of 2004
author: Bill Wood - Jazz Fan in Orlando

Ms. Pascale's performance on this disc is perhaps the most sincere jazz vocal performance I've heard in a "new artist." The title track should be a "click here to understand" link in the online dictionary under the definition of "swing." My wife and I danced in the kitchen while cooking to "Embracable You" and the meal turned out superb, if you know what I mean and I think you do. It's more than just the voice that hooks you on this CD. It's the relationship between vocalist and musicians playing an excellent selection of tunes in a true jazz mode -- not pop adaptations like so many of the alleged artists recording as jazz vocalists these days. These vocals and these musicians are so appealing on disc the jazz fan in me wishes I had a house in Philadelphia down the street from the club they play at every night. This is the real deal. The only reason I don't award 5 stars is to see what the next CD can accomplish. Please, Ms. Pascale, record it soon. And come to Orlando to perform! (Thanks to WUCF-FM for interviewing and playing this new artist.)

  • The Philadelphia Metro raved,
    author: Philadelphia Metro

“When Lights Are Low,” easily one of the finest pop/jazz vocal offerings this year by anyone, anywhere, backed by a first-class local group.

  • The whole album oozes perfection
    author: jazz-not-jazz

A very impressive debut album of jazz standards by a gifted singer that will stick like glue in your CD player. And finally the one album of cover versions that makes me throw all my prejudice about cover albums to the winds.

  • Step back into an era of glamour, Joanna Pascale captures the essence of classic
    author: JAZZ FAN

Why is such a jewel kept tucked away in Philadelphia? With an instrument such as Joanna's and a movie star image, this lady is headed for the stars!Check out this romantic and sincere dedication to the GREAT AMERICAN CLASSICS. Here's one beauty on the rise. BRAVO!
