Far removed from the modern space funk grooves of his band Kava Kava, lead singer Pat Fulgoni travelled back to the Czech Republic to launch the album 'Dark Side Of The Blues' (Faust Records, Prague) at the 5th Sumperk International Blues Alive Festival. Footage from this performance went on to come second in Czech TV's Grammies!!
Subtitled Pat Fulgoni live in Prague, 'Dark Side of the Blues' is a diverse songbook of old blues material from John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson to BB King, Ray Charles to Bill Withers, recorded straight down as live unadulterated blues sessions in the notorious Faust Records Studios, Dejvicka, Prague (famous for not only Faust's Water but many outstanding albums including the Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell CD by Killing Joke for Cooking Vinyl Records, 2006) This isn't the first collaboration in this studio between Pat and Czech musicians. In fact a few years earlier Mr Faust persuaded Pat to record a very spooky album 'Prague Ghosts' with musicians from the infamous underground Czech band Urfaust and American guitarist Gary Lucas (from Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band)
Featured on Dark Side of the Blues are musicians from Prague based, BB King connected outfit The Bluesmen. Band leader and guitarist Jan Martinek (nb just days before the revolution, his was the historical voice behind the radio announcement of a General Strike in former Czechoslovakia!) brings in his young Stevie Ray Vaughan influenced son Lukas Martinek to deliver an awesome rendition of 'Texas Flood'. Other highlights include distinctly soulful versions of BB King and Ray Charles standards 'Thrill Is Gone' and 'Hard Times'.
