Now & Then, Patrício da Silva’s new crossover CD featuring dynamic new classical works with jazzy undertones counterpointed by frolicking popular songs from the great depression reminiscent of Woody Allen films. The CD was recorded live in concert with British Invasion rock star and historian of early American and British popular music, Ian Whitcomb; featured piano soloist of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Disney Hall, Bryan Pezzone; classical guitarist Michael Kudirka; concert pianist Yevgeniy Milyavskiy; and the 15-piece What’s Next? Ensemble conducted by Vimbayi Kaziboni.

Das Magazin von Steinway identified Patrício da Silva’s compositions as, “A true firework of youth and strength.” Musical Opinion stated, “Here is a genuine creative voice, his work being full of interest and beguiling invention.” Now & Then: Music from the Great Depression(s) 2010 / 1929 once again demonstrates da Silva’s extensive range of compositional mastery, where he juxtaposes his latest classical works with his effervescent arrangements of 1930’s depression era popular songs. “Kurt Weil was the first depression ... We are reflecting the second. Through this depression, we are actually creating great works of art, which is often the case ... When you have bad times, you have great music,” said Ian Whitcomb. Together, these two very different genres counterpointed by a single composer, bring an unparalleled richness to the hearts and spirits of music lovers everywhere.

First listen to tracks 05-07 “Keep Calm and Carry On: Guitar Concert (Movements I-III).” This piece rivals Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concerto de Aranjuez” and Antonio Vivaldi’s multiple guitar concertos.

First listen to tracks 08-14 which take you on a tour of 1930’s jazz halls with a stride piano improvisation, followed by a suite of classic popular songs from the period, arranged today for a large ensemble.
