Good music from good people
author: John Book
Fans of good rock and blues will find a lot to cheer about when picking up Good News (Silverado) by Patrick Flynn. Flynn comes from an era when it was perfectly alright to enjoy good vibes, good times, and good people, when people relied on what you could see and not what wasn't there. His guitar playing sounds like he has listened to his fair share of Eric Clapton and Duane Allman records, and he gets a chance to play and sing with a lot of heart and compassion.
The music on Good News could easily be part of the jam band movement, or people who still enjoy good rock'n'roll without a lot of flash or showing off. Whether it's Loggins & Messina, The Dave Matthews Band, or The Neville Brothers, the elements that made those groups great are also evident in Flynn's music. Whether he's talking about the realization of life coming to a close ("Don't Take Your Love Away"), mistrust ("The Realest"), or a need to find a place of solace ("I Wanna Go There"), Flynn is a voice and musician of experience, someone who has lived, someone who wants to experience more, and yet he also writes in a way which also says that time is short, value what you have today. He seems like a laid back guy who could share some incredible stories, and he does on this album, but one who knows that the bitter side of life will bite you on the ass at every opportunity. He plays some blues licks like the best of them, but lets the listener know in his style that with a positive attitude and a good heart, everything is going to be okay.
