Album Notes

If you're a fan of mid-period Beatles, I think you'll like my latest CD Egghead. Seems like I always have Revolver in the back of my mind whenever I record and I think it definitely shows on this project. The bedrock of all the tracks is just me, or me and Tim Porterfield, banging away on acoustic guitars, so there is a strong folk presence under all the power pop.

Here's some info on some of the other players. On electric guitar, my buddy, Peter Stroud, was kind enough to help out. Peter is fantastic and always does a beautiful job of coaxing all of those classic 60's tones from his vintage gear. Peter is currently in Sheryl Crow's band. He even has a co-write on Sheryl's latest CD, c'mon, c'mon. For more on Peter, check out "personality snapshot: Peter Stroud" at www.sherylcrow.com. On bass, I've got Atlanta legend, Ricky Keller. Ricky is one of those rare "complete musicians." On the latest Bruce Springsteen CD, The Rising, you can hear some of Ricky's string arrangements. Tom Knight takes care of the drums and he's killer. Tom had just gotten off the road with TLC when we started work on Egghead. I love working with Tom, he's a "quick study," as they say. My songs have a fair amount of meter changes and Tom always makes them feel real natural.

I recorded Egghead in 2000 in Atlanta, GA at Southern Living at Its Finest. Russ Fowler and I produced the CD. Russ also engineered. Russ has engineered for a lot of cool artists: Michael Penn, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Crows, to name just a few.

This record was a lot of fun to make and I hope you check it out. Here are some things that folks have said about me and my music:

"Unbelievable! This is the kind of stuff that makes life worthwhile! Absolute killer writing, singing, playing...well, everything's killer! Supersonic Girl is fantastic and will be going through my head for the foreseeable future!" - Alan Harber, purepop.com

That's Why He Sleeps at Night "this song rules!!! I love it! I was hooked from the first lyric, "Carbuncular curmudgeon..." The song is in 4/4 time, but has the most delightful peppering of 7/8 measures dropped in, to keep you off balance. There is a strong Tom Petty vibe as well as a Michael Penn vibe. Absolutely top notch." - MP3.com Cream of the Crop Pop

"Local songwriter who would be accused of plagiarizing Lennon and McCartney if this were 1965. As it is, he writes melodies that Paul McCartney would claim as his own if he could get away with it. His song "Awhile to Mend" is one of the finest pop songs of the year and, if there be any justice, it'll be a huge hit rather than an ignored masterpiece." - Creative Loafing, Music Menu

"Music this charming isn't marketed much these days, unfortunately. Strains of vintage George Harrison and Elvis Costello can be heard from time to time in the phrasing and harmonies..." Creative Loafing, Tape Rolling

"Absolutely gorgeous and consistently excellent. Fans of Not Lame's Idle Jets, Michael Penn and lots of jangle with their guitar sounds will not miss .... The highest rating from Not Lame. Extremely highly recommended to anyone digging great music." - Not Lame.com
