アメリカには、ローカルを含めて素晴しいギタリストが、大勢いるのだけど、残念ながらその多くは、我が国のジャズファンにほとんど名前が知られていない。
このNYのギタリスト、Paul Ablerも該当すると思うのだけど、この1997年に録音された作品がなかなか良いので、紹介しようと思う。
生まれ育った街、デトロイトや西海岸、そして現在活動拠点としているNYと色々な都市で演奏してきており、テレビや映画音楽も手がけているようです。
ジャズだけでなく、幅広い音楽活動を経験してきたことは演奏家、作曲家としてとてもプラスに作用しているように思える。
このアルバム自体、全曲オリジナル（Naimaを除く）で構成されているのですが、バリエーション豊かな作曲は、あくまでもアコースティックなメインストリームジャズでありながら、ポストバップやブラジリアンテイストの作風が加味されており、一筋縄ではいかないものとなっています。
カートローゼン・ウィンクル以降の現代ジャズギタリストの手法はほとんど見受けられず、パット・マルティーノ系のスタイルがメインになっており、FSNT系作風が苦手な方にも、耳馴染みの良いものと言えましょう。
シンディ・ブラックマンのドラムやウィリアム・エヴァンスのピアノも実にいい働きをしており、アルバムの成功に一役かっている。
アルバム全体に流れる自由で快活、伸びやかな雰囲気も好ましい。
ギター好きの方は頬が緩むアルバムなのは間違いない。
このまま忘れ去られるには惜しい掘り起こし作としてお薦めいたします。
