Album Notes

ABOUT THE CREATION OF THIS RECORDING:

While working with legendary jazz musician Max Roach on a vocal project, Max read some of Paula's poetry and encouraged her to bring her poems together with music.

Paula and pianist Rudi Wongozi recorded this CD in one take with Rudi improvising on the piano as Paula red her poetry.

Paula Hackett grew up in Berkeley, California and comes from a family of writers. She started writing poetry at the age of 14. In the early 80's Paula and her brother John began writing lyrics together. They have written lyrics with Teddy Edwards, John Handy, Ivan Lins, Joe Sample, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Cedar Walton and other great composers.

Paula, along with her brother John and Cedar Walton, produced the Diane Witherspoon CD "You May Never Know", with the music of Cedar Walton and the lyrics of John & Paula Hackett. They also produced two songs on the Koch release "Rare Beauty - Intimate Gems of Duke Ellington" with saxophonist John Handy's solo rendition of "Don't You Know I Care" and "It's Kind Of Lonesome Out Tonight" with Diane Witherspoon on vocals and Rudi Wongozi on piano.

Paula and John have again teamed up with Diane Witherspoon on her new CD "L.A. After Dark" recorded on Summet Records in February 2004. On this project the Hacketts provide the lyrics to the music of Tyrone Brown, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Teddy Edwards, Eddie Marshall & Eddie "Cleanhead Vison."

Poetic Genius
author: Joanne Olivieri
As a poet I am deeply touched by this spoken word and music cd. Paula's unique voice has a soothing yet powerful tone which enhances each poetic form. The imagery in her poetry is some of the best I've ever heard or read. A wonderful poetic journey.
