Album Notes

Paul Carman - saxophones
Mark Massey - ac. piano
Joel Hamilton - ac. bass
Steve Distanislao - drums

This is ESP's second CD recorded in 1995. The band remains the same as the first CD "Passion" except Joel Hamilton replaces Ken Filiano on the bass (due to Ken's relocating to NYC). Joel was hand picked by Ken to be his replacement and the band couldn't be happier.

The CD was recorded "live" (in the studio) to 2 track. The band is burning once again while exhibiting the amazing intuitive interplay for which they have become known. This recording is a bit "edgier" than "Passion" and should appeal to more hard core jazz listeners.

The title track is our favorite cut (too bad it wouldn't work as one of the audio examples due to the over 2min sax intro) featuring an odd meter "Ornette-like" head followed by a "free" improvisation by the ensemble.

The 2nd track, "Ugly Beauty", was recorded off the cuff as something to clear our heads after working hard on another tune. It turned out to be the best ballad we've ever recorded!!

There was so much good stuff that came out of this session that it was hard to trim it down to a single CD. The upside of that is that every track is a great one, all 9 of them. And we just love Mark's tune "The Magic In You" as the final tune on the CD. This is the tune we would end our gigs with when we play live.....it's a wonderful send-off.

Thanks for listening.

Paul

Wow! On the the edge of your seat or "by the seat of your pants" Paul Carmans saxophones (Alto and Tenor)set a wonderful sound stage. A nimble, very flexable group thanks to strong supporting characters. This player makes the Alto saxophone sing! Bopalot!
