As the first chill of autumn fills the evening air, I'm crammed with a multitude of pressing querries as I eagerly await the arrival of Paul Hunt, a unique NYC solo artist.
Paul arrives, on time at this trendy Manhattan coffee bar and as he walks over to greet me, the sultry aroma of the luscious brew enhances the already relaxed mood-set for the interview. His smiling & ready-saucer-blue eyes are intent as I pose the first question: How did this whole music thing get it's start anyway? "I got my first guitar at age 10, my dad got it in Tijuana, it was a big piece of junk but good to learn on I still have it today". My early influences were Hendrix, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden , Metallica , Def Leppard, Van Halen." Wow, that's a lot of metal Paul."Yup, metal ruled my world back then and has been a big influence". early Metallica, Black Flag, Jane's Addiction, Slayer, Ted Nugent, Pixies, Rod Stewert, Melvins, The Clash and Hell's Kitchen. Other genre he idolizes are 80's bands "That was a singles market the Menroes, XTC, Soft Cell, Devo, split enz. " "There are a lot of great tunes from the 80's." All these amazing bands set the mode and contributed to Paul's dedication to becoming a music artist. Born, September 8, 1971, Paul recollects his early years in stunning San Diego. His handsome good looks just lend more appeal to this soon to be star and I ask him about his childhood. "It was really cool but probably even cooler moving to Seattle for what was to come". A move to Seattle by the family at age of 14, his first guitar and his early interest in Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhodes had a most motivating effect on his early musical ambitions. His teen years were spent in Seattle in a band called MACHINE who recorded 25 songs. He was fortunately in Seattle at the height of the famous grunge scene which also had its origins there in the early 90's. This experience plus his even earlier rock days have given his voice and guitar the lush sound that enhance Paul's style today. His modern eclecticism is a gift for this solo artist. Paul lists some of his favorites as follows: the color blue, Star Trek, being a vegetarian, (not virgin, Vegetarian) the movies "2001 A Space Odyssey, Jaws and "Apocalypse Now". His top TV pixwould be the "Simpsons", "Star Trek" and an "absolutely must see " Famaily Guy"
Other faves include, black cadillacs, tea not coffee, purple passionfruit sorbet and potato tacos. Today, living in Greenwich Village and performing in the heart of NYC and environs , Paul continues to draw great cool crowds including the ubiquitous groupie! "C'est La Vie" as Paul says, it doesn't phase him much anymore, lol! All this chatting has made us want to order something to drink, we summon a waiter and take a well deserved chilled out break till next time with Paul.
