Album Notes

When the world’s great painters wanted to create a more dramatic manner of bringing their canvases to life, they developed a technique known as Chiaroscuro. This dramatic manner of layering paint was used to emphasize the marked contrast and interplay between shadows and light. This recording traverses a colorful palate of musical masterworks that demonstrate similar qualities of manipulating shadow and light.

Master Sound Painter!

Paul effortlessly conveys each composer's narrative style with perfection while emitting a warmth that is clearly his own. The Villa-Lobos pieces are particularly exciting, but the entire CD is a beautiful listen. You'll want this CD to be in your regular rotation stack!

More Villa-Lobos

I attended Paul's October 2009 recital in La Jolla when he performed all of these pieces LIVE. The CD was ten times better than the live performance, and the interpetation of all the pieces in the CD are spot on! Though I have always thought of Dr. Kenyon as a great Haydn interpreter, Paul's Villa-Lobos performance was his best playing on the Chiaroscuro CD. My only hope is the Bachianas Brasilieras is only the beginning of Paul's future piano moments in this wonderful vein of sound!

I expected this music to serve as good background music while I work...and am delighted to discover that it engages me in ways that have me unable to multi-task while listening. It's music for the sake of music, which is always a good thing for me. Paul's expertise and interpretation, performing the music with the "layering" effect is brilliant and awe inspiring. I've purchased many copies of this, as superb music is meant to be shared.
