New York-based singer-songwriter Paul Loren makes no apologies for his unique brand of soulful piano-based music and lyrics being labelled as “Pop.”
“I think pop music, by its very nature, is a hybrid--is a mutt,” says Paul. “It’s a distilled representation of many peoples and their music. That’s what I choose to write and perform: a conglomerate of my own musical tastes, travels, experiences.”
With “I’M READY,” the debut album available now, Paul paints a broad musical palette with nods to Afro-Brazilian and Caribbean, Gospel, Funk, Jazz, Tin Pan Alley and Psychedelic influences.
“What has always intrigued me about music is the blending of diverse sounds and textures--how just one phrase can perk up your ears as well as spark your imagination.”
The ten original tracks are a jubilant ode to lost love and gained perspective--poignant, yet celebratory.
What one notices almost instantly, is the apparent absence of electronic, synthetic or digital instrumentation, creating a natural, visceral and classic sonic foundation. The album, produced by veteran Philip A. Jimenez, has roots in the timeless pop music of the 1960’s and 70’s.
Says Paul: “We chose to sidestep the current ‘industry standards’ in how and what we recorded--the honesty of avoiding all the traps of digital cover-ups is really appealing to me. From the onset, we wanted to return to the values of timeless pop music, both in songwriting and production.”
