Paul Reeves’ live music invites you into an elaborate world of musical charm. One could compare the live experience to the significantly sized citrus tree that yields a remarkably small blossom and yet produces a fragrant aroma. Deep from the retreats of Paul’s imagination we find a compilation of songs on “Face to Face” that invite us to stop hiding and join a man as he looks truth unabashedly in the face with an expectation and hope of things to come and things to change.
Someone much larger lives inside of Paul Reeves, the man, giving him the capacity to create such a complex musical sound. That someone is the impervious young Reeves that entertained himself with his own day dreams as a child of becoming like “Pistol” Pete Maravich, a former Hawks basketball player, which manifested into a regiment of basketball drills and discipline. Paul attributes his disciplined attack of the guitar when he began to play seriously at the age of 20 to his application of similar discipline and drill techniques to the ones he used when he sought basketball stardom. About the same time, Paul recalls admiring his father’s guitar skills when they took surfing trips together. There the seed of curiosity for and interest in music was planted.
Reeves writes music as a tool to process the deep emotional experiences that plague all young people like love, fear, failure, success, and tender moments standing before God. Paul writes lyrics that are honest and vulnerable, laying his own image and reputation aside to reflect what is undeniable. Reeves abandons the disguise that society expects us to acquire to hide the areas of our lives that are less than perfect. This worldview resonates with his fans for one of two reasons. They too live with such veracity or, they desire to live with similar courage and find hope in Reeves’ lyrics.
Paul looks forward to the journey ahead as he adjusts to the growing responsibilities that are ahead of him, taking wife, job, and a home away from home. We can expect that he will continue to hide nothing from his lyrics and he will persistently value growth and experimentation with his music. He, like the generation emerging through the culture, fuses the intensity and significance of a traditional life with the creative and innovative expressions that are dawning. For a generation just beginning to define itself and seeking authenticity wherever it materializes, Reeves stands as a striking example of the very critical elements that are appearing to form their definition: spiritual, vulnerable, honest and free.
