**LEFT OF THE DIAL** CD REVIEW
"Come on kids and grab my song, and just hang on," Phil Avalos urges during "Hang On," one of fourteen concise, crunchy nuggets of inviting, addictive pop covered grungey guitar that comprise Don't Shake Me Up. Anyone with a love for the musical junction where hooky power-pop merges with raw, honest indie-rock sound quality and the hyper thrust of punk should follow Avalos' lyrical advice. It seems that the main goal of Avalos and his backing band, The Quiet Lanes, is to make songs that are short but sweet enough to stick in your minds for a long time. Don't Shake Me Up is loaded with choruses that keep coming back like boomerangs. The fact is, even if you don't grab Avalos' tunes, they're likely to grab onto you, they're so relentlessly catchy. They're the kind of songs you find yourself spontaneously humming before you're even aware of it. This disc is liable to satisfy fans fo early Green Day and Weezer as well as lesser known, but no less influential, bands like Superchunk, Guided By Voices and The Promise Ring. Sometimes the inspiration is mined from bands as far back as the Jam, but the reference points here come from the mid '90's, when the most exciting music emanated from the basements and garages in college towns. - Matt Barber

The new sounds of punk ass bliss!
author: Divesean
Phil Avalos & The Quiet Lanes are knocking them down with their adventurous new release! Several new angles in the pop-punk sound and riddled with a modish passion that makes you want to get up and move about the cabin. Opening with vintage Sometimes 7, "Pop Start" shows the master's true colors and sheer joy in expression. Rev it up with "Come On Action," more of punk ass number - throwing out some true American kickin' street sound. "Tape Me a Revolution" will awaken some of the dead Beatles just to see that things are still shakin'. The rockin' sounds of "You Heard Me Punk" makes an exciting American verb out of the punk movement. The Quiet Lanes have pulled off a clean sound of pop pleasure and simple brilliance!

Well I've babbled enough.

"Don't Shake Me Up" has to be one of the best albums I've heard this year. At first it was the familiar S7 sound, then as the cd went on I could really hear how the music has changed - but without losing the trademark sound. All of the songs are great, but I really like "She Says" and "Tape Me A Revolution". I love the vocals on those two. And I like "Jennifer Someday" too, especially cause it has my name in it. Ha ha. Oh and "It's Alright" sounds a little like Little Band That Could. It's cool to hear the songs getting heavier and more raw.
