In Twisted Folk, soprano Rachel Payne infuses the earthen music of fire and field with the operatic flare of stage and society. A modernist classical compositional sound creates the framework for an acoustic adventure where voice and piano are certain to please anyone whose spirit has ever been stirred by the haunting strains of folk song revelry.

Twisted Folk brings together the insights and writings of musical storytellers both ancient and modern to create fresh interpretations of some of the most beloved folk songs of Ireland, England and America. To combine folk (the music of field and fireside) with opera (the music of stage and society) produces an effect which is at once both exultant and haunting—and which has required the talents of some of the most innovative modern composers working today. These artists, drawn from graduates and professors of Manhattan School of Music, are here featured alongside a giant in the American song form, Aaron Copland. The album’s performers, soprano Rachel Payne and pianist Reiko Füting team up to communicate through new eyes the experiences, laments and celebrations of life on home fronts across the globe.

Fantastic stuff!

This music is twisted. But it's a good twisted! It's a meditative twisted. Well, ok, maybe it's not as twisted so much as it's just buttery meditative. Sunday naptime melted butter on a tasty scone meditative twisted good. Great work!
