Album Notes

Pay the Reckoning is a traditional Irish band featuring Ken Doyle on flute, vocals, tin whistles, and bodhrán, and Mark Pitner on bouzouki, vocals, guitar, and mandola, supplemented by the newest member of the band, Casey Phillips on tenor banjo. Raised among the rich musical heritage of East Tennessee, Pay the Reckoning stays true to the tradition that gave birth to bluegrass and old time music. Undeniably influenced by artists they admire, Pay the Reckoning plays traditional Irish music with seasonings of Planxty, The Dubliners, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin. The Green Mountain is their debut album.

This is an album for serious fans of traditional Irish folk music. These guys know their stuff—you won’t find new age fluff here. The energy and enthusiasm in Pitner’s guitar playing lend a jaunty air to these tunes that could make a guitar lover out of anyone. I especially enjoyed the drone like sounds of Pitner’s bouzouki playing on Sally Brown that remind me of Appalachian dulcimers. And is that a blues harmonica I hear on that tune? The precision and sheer beauty of Doyle’s flute playing is breathtaking. The whistle descant on Spancil Hill produces cascades of sound that make this the most gorgeous version of this song I’ve ever heard. Phillips’ tenor banjo is a welcome addition and I hope to hear more from him in future releases. All in all, this is a fantastic first release from this up and coming band. I can’t wait for more!
