Paul De Castro y su Orquesta Dengue offers us a rich variety of danceable yet mentally stimulating music. A departure from the rest of Latin Jazz offerings in the market today, De Castro has conjured up a rewarding mix of diverse styles, which somehow end up unified in his music. Also, of great interest is the participation of Latin Jazz and Cuban music luminaries such as Justo Almario (saxophone), Danilo Lozano (flute), Kevin Ricard (percussion), Ramon Flores (trumpet), and Sal Cracchiolo (trumpet), who blend their musical skills to this new way of conceptualizing Latin Jazz.
The music:
Paul De Castro without doubt is one of the most creative musical minds in Latin Jazz today. His songs range a wide variety of styles form hard hitting timba/jazz as is the case of Bueno Pá Gozar to a traditional descarga such as Maestro Frank which was written in memory of the legendary pianist Frank Emilio. There are surprising re-interpretations of jazz standards as heard in Que Cosa, Dejate de Boberias, and Azulejos; as well as striking new songs, which defy definition such as Una Miradita. These songs have offered De Castro a starting point, which take the listeners along a surprising musical journey.

Bueno Pa Gozar
author: Scott Oakley
Maestro, Congratulations! Totally dig your new CD. Been listening, well, continuously. Super tight, love that horn section, man what did you do to get them to play as such a section. Dig the nod to "A Train". Can't help my favorite being Pa Gozar because I had the pleasure of trying to play it!
Finally, yes the piano playing, Maestro you are the King of Montunos, and the solos - si, bueno!
See ya soon Mi Profesor,
Scott

Bueno Pa Gozar

This CD happily reminds me of the vibrant Latin Jazz that pervades the markets and streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Thanks to Paul DeCastro for putting out a Latin Jazz CD that captures the dancing spirit of the idiom. Excellent recording.

A Breath of Fresh Air
author: juan
This excellent recording is full of surprises. Paul De Castro and Orquesta Dengue present us not only with the fusion of standard Cuban rhythms (rumba, mambo, cha-cha, son) and bebop characteristic of most Latin jazz, but also incorporate more recent styles that have developed in the island, such as songo and timba. In fact, throughout Bueno Pá Gozar intense Latin jazz instrumentals seamlessly transform into heady vocal-based dance songs, and vice-versa. But even when they stick closer to mainstream Latin Jazz, for instance in the first and fourth tracks—“Chico” and “Déjate de boberías”—there are unexpected moments: the timba bass licks in the first, the vocals in the second, which is based on Billy Strayhorn’s classic “Take the A Train.” Perhaps the most unexpected moment is to be found when a funk organ sound and Tower of Power style horns show up in the middle of the timba-influenced “Una miradita”. Superbly arranged and produced, Bueno Pá Gozar is a breath of fresh air in the somewhat stagnant musical world of Latin jazz.
