I'm a self-annointed horn band afficianado. This is some highly creative stuff...very, very cool, and completely accessible. These guys have big ears and big ideas, and they are, in a very good way, pushing envelopes and staying true to the genres at the same time. Great grooves, great playing, & great orchestration. I can't imagine anyone being unhappy with purchasing this CD.

Virtually flawless. Intimately crafted. A stone groove.

The latest CD by PDF is virtually flawless. I'm sure those who follow their performances anticipated a fine new recording from this eclectic and ever-progressive ensemble, but I believe it's unlikely anyone expected such an intimately crafted set of sounds. Unlike their last CD, this new presentation forgoes unmelodic hip-hop rap and bathes the listener in the serious vocal styles of Ian Wick. John Cardoni on guitar seems to play a larger role and has come into his own with a unique approach (in a McLaughlin-esque way). The horns are, as always, the mainstay of the sound. They can be both sweet and harsh, understated or underfoot. I wouldn't be surprised to see them credited on other recordings as the PDF Horns much like the old Tower of Power dudes. The band's rhythm section (bass and drums) are the first component of the group that truly knocked me out at their live performances and on this latest endeavor they continue to be not only the foundation of the organization but also the walls that keep everyone inside the musical moment. In addition, I'm surprised that at my ripe old age of 54 how much I appreciate the contribution of the turntable. Tasteful, artful and blended perfectly, it's a credit to the spinner. The recording's production cannot be overlooked for its dynamic use of directorial restraint. No cheap hooks here...pure pro. Yes, I think PDF's Basement Chemistry is the best CD I've purchased this year. This recording propels them well beyond live Jam/Groove band status.
