My kind of voice
author: Esther Berlanga Ryan
Peggie Perkins is my kind of voice. We listen to music because it takes us places where we have never been before, and that we would have never even heard of if it wasn’t for the music we listen to. Whatever happened to our innocence while growing up it is usually possible to retain and see it glow every time there is music that moves us around us. Personally, I do not believe in classified boxes that much, although I like for my music to be called just what it is; no disguises, no half-truths and no broken promises of better days. Music is a gift we give to ourselves. It needs to be true in order to really mean something valuable. Listening to Peggie Perkins sing, one thinks that the world has finally come back to its senses, and the heart sits way up there in the clouds smiling through, unable to move because it is overwhelmed with awe.
The approach she chooses to deliver giant compositions like Etta James’ signature song “At Last”, Duke Ellington’s “It don’t mean a thing (if it ain’t got that swing)”, and largely revisited American Songbook Jazz standards, such as “My Romance”, “The Nearness of You”, “Tenderly”, “Angel Eyes” or “Autumn Leaves”, leaves no room for doubt: this album is a masterpiece of originality and class. Add an explosive “Moondance” or a soulful ‘Cry me a river” to the mix, and you will then understand what perfection really is. There is a difference between singing a song and living in a song. The same way Frank Sinatra populated each and every song he ever recorded, Peggie seems to mystically and lawfully own each and every song she has decided to share with you and me. The final result is absolutely brilliant.
Her solid, perfectly balanced, vibrant voice is a dream come true. There is strength and there is sensibility, carefully intertwined and forever in harmony with the music that rocks her very soul. Selflessly, she gathers every emotion she seems capable of feeling with each of those eleven songs captured on her first professional album. Her beautiful and raw contralto voice turns into some alive and powerful force of nature, showering us with the best vocal Jazz we have had the pleasure to listen to ever since the days when Sarah Vaughan sang live at Chicago’s Mister Kelly’s with a trio of some the best Jazz musicians back in the late fifties. It is quite a compliment that I firmly believe Peggie Perkins has earned.
Enchanting, “At Last” (© 2008 Peggie Perkins), will find the way to your most private dreams and will give them a reason to live on right where they belong. Jazz with a delicate and yet so electric twist of R&B, that will truly inspire you every time you pay her a visit.
